We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shuai Jiang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shuai below.
Alright, Shuai thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Three projects have been particularly meaningful in my career: the 2021 “Under the Same Moon” Hanfu Show at the USC Pacific Asia Museum (USC PAM), where I served as both makeup artist and stylist; my role as a makeup artist and stylist on the Netflix TV show “Bling Empire”; and receiving the International Beauty Industry (IBI) Award for Best Culturally Inspired Work. Each of these experiences has profoundly shaped my professional journey and underscored my commitment to cultural representation in beauty and fashion.
One of my most meaningful projects was the 2021 “Under the Same Moon” Hanfu Show at the USC Pacific Asia Museum. In this role, I was responsible not only for styling but also for coordinating makeup, hairstyling, and Hanfu clothing. I developed a distinctive layout that brought a fresh perspective to the forefront, collaborating effectively with the production team and all performers throughout the event. Under my direction, the styling was executed beyond expectations, contributing to the overwhelming success of the show. Despite the challenges, this project was immensely rewarding. It served as a culmination of my years of preparation as a stylist and a real-world test of my achievements, including those recognized by the International Beauty Industry (IBI) Award.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Shuai Jiang, also known as Lizi. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphics Design from ArtCenter College of Design in 2017. After initially working as a graphic designer, I discovered a profound joy in applying my artistic skills to real people, which ignited my passion for makeup art, styling, and photography. In 2019, I was honored with the International IBI Beauty Award for the best culturally inspired makeup. My work has also been featured in prestigious publications such as Vogue Italia, Faddy, PUMP, Surreal, MARIKA, and Emote magazine.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
there’s a deep-seated mission that drives my creative journey: to bridge cultural heritage and contemporary artistry through makeup, styling, and photography. My goal is to create visually captivating narratives that not only appeal aesthetically but also resonate with audiences on a deeper cultural level. By integrating traditional elements from various cultures, particularly from my Asian heritage, with modern design principles, I strive to foster appreciation and understanding of cultural diversity through beauty and fashion. This mission not only enriches my work but also inspires others to explore and embrace different cultural perspectives in their own creative expressions.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building my reputation within the competitive beauty and fashion industry has largely been a result of word-of-mouth recommendations from my clients. Each positive recommendation from a client is like a vote of confidence that gradually cements my standing in the market. Every month, this organic growth is fueled by the experiences and feedback of those I work with.
During every photo shoot, I prioritize understanding the unique needs and visions of my clients. This involves a thorough consultation process where I deeply engage with each client to grasp not only the requirements of the project but also the subtler nuances of their personal or brand story. My commitment to capturing the best aspects of each client, whether through makeup, styling, or photography, ensures that the final output not only meets but often exceeds their expectations. This dedication to excellence and client satisfaction is what inspires clients to recommend my services to others, helping to expand my network and enhance my reputation.”
This version of your response elaborates on the impact of client recommendations and highlights your client-centric approach, which could resonate well with your audience.
