We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Clarence & Annette Turner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Clarence & Annette, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
I was honored to sing the national anthem at the Army’s 245th birthday celebration/banquet. While siting waiting, a gentleman in a bright red jacket was wheeled in, in a wheel chair. I thought it odd to attend such a function in such attire. But later I found out he was a Tuskegee Airman. I had to go meet him. My husband and I went over and introduced ourselves. He and my husband hit it off right away. I watched in awe as he cut up with my husband, like they were old friends. Then I asked what I thought was a ridiculous question. “Has anyone ever written a book about you? He said no, I said I would love to if he would consider it, He immediately said yes. We made arrangements to meet him at his church, just to talk. But he invited us to his house. It was like we walked into a Tuskegee Airman Museum. He was the sweetest, kindest man. When we met again, I had my recorder in tow and my husband as the interviewer. He talked, we listened. It was an amazing experience. I was able to get his book in his hands for his 95th birthday. He died the next year, on my birthday (1/25) But let me say. I was so excited when he said. “Yes!” I couldn’t sleep. I could not believe that no one had written anything about him, much less, him allowing me to. It was truly an honor.
Clarence & Annette, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are authors and co-authors. I am a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern and a Certified Professional Life Coach, focusing on couples and relationships. It all started when I was going to speak at a woman’s event and I thought it would be a good idea to have a book available. I used the metaphor of the transformation of the caterpillar though put the book. A sister at my church read the book and noted the butterfly throughout and gave me a butterfly broach. My husband and I decided to make up butterfly plaques to encourage others to transform into their best selves.
I have a passion for helping people achieve their personal and professional goals. My mission is to empower individuals to transform their lives, much like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis. My coaching business is dedicated to personal growth and transformation. I provide one-on-one virtual coaching sessions, workshops, and motivational speaking engagements, all aimed at fostering self-improvement and life balance.
Sista T’s Butterfly Solutions offers beautifully crafted butterfly plaques and jewelry. They are meticulously crafted with attention to detail, making them not only decorative pieces but also meaningful symbolism to uplift and motivate individuals on their path to self-discovery and transformation.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
We actually met the month before I ETS’d (Exited The Service) of the military. We ultimately met on a blind date. I say ultimately because we had met briefly before, in the NCO Club park. He helped me get my sisters intoxicated boyfriend into his car. I thought, “That is a nice guy!” A few weeks later, my sister’s ex-boyfriend called me and asked if I’d go to a ball with someone or at least let him have my phone number. I immediately said, “No!” I had went on one blind date before, and it was terrible. It took months to get rid of the guy. But the friend insisted until I finally said yes. When he came to my apartment, I realized it was the same nice guy I’d met in the NCO Club park.
We went to the ball. We got married after dating for 6 weeks. In November of this year we will be married for 45 years,
