Shana , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?

After taking a long break from my engineering career to raise my kids and enjoy their childhood, I found myself longing to return to work. However, the idea of going back to a traditional job with limited creativity and freedom did not appeal to me. I wanted a career that would allow me to pursue my passion and still being able to spend time around my children. That’s when the idea of becoming a food photographer sparked in my mind. Despite some skepticism from those around me, who were used to the corporate world, I decided to take a leap of faith. And now, here I am, indulging in my love for photography and food as a full-time food photographer. It goes to show that with determination and passion, it is possible to carve out a fulfilling career path that aligns with one’s true interests and brings joy and satisfaction.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

After dedicating time to numerous comprehensive courses and workshops, working closely with mentors, who definitely helped me stay focused and held me accountable, I have made the bold decision to officially launch my own photography business and have begun marketing myself as a professional photographer in a very competitive market. It may not have been a simple journey, and I definitely had some doubts and still facing a few challenges but the determination to push through obstacles and stay committed to my goals has brought me to where I am today. The mindset of perseverance and consistency is what ultimately leads to success.

I specialize in creating stunning visuals for a variety of industries including restaurants, F&B brands, and editorial publications.

I am dedicated to solving the problem of creating appealing visuals that aligns with the brand’s voice, evoke emotions and drive engagement for my clients. I pay attention to details and maintain constant communication with the client at every stage to ensure flawless execution and help my clients stand out in a competitive market.

I take pride in the lovely relationships I have built with clients and the positive feedback I have received for my work. Potential clients can trust that when they work with me, they will receive professional, captivating visuals that exceed their expectations to help elevate their brand and make their products shine.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?

As a photographer, I have found that pitching has been the most effective way to acquire new clients. Through customized emails and proposals to the right people, I have been able to secure valuable opportunities and grow my client base. However, the importance of referrals and retainers is crucial in maintaining and expanding my business. Referrals from satisfied clients not only bring in new business but also serve as a testament to the quality of my services. Retainers, on the other hand, provide a steady stream of income and foster long-term relationships with clients. By strategically leveraging pitching, referrals, and retainers, I am able to sustain and grow my business for the long term.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?

Non-creatives may find it challenging to understand the significance of a determined mindset, the power of manifesting success (even though it sounds clichéd), and the necessity of maintaining crazy faith to persevere through challenges.

I have learnt that we have the power to craft a unique and fulfilling path by channeling our focus and determination towards creating a life that aligns with our goals and values.

Coming from a corporate background, there were times when I also doubted the importance of believing in myself and my abilities. However, I have come to learn that that we creatives place immense value on cultivating a strong positive mindset and faith. Continuously honing these qualities enables us to overcome obstacles, embrace bold risks, and ultimately achieve success. At the end of the day, it’s our responsibility to ensure that everything falls into place and to hold ourselves accountable for making it happen.

I also have come to understand the true value of a great partner, our photography community and creative friends, whether they are present in real life or virtually through instagram. Working on your own is not all sunshine and roses, so this valuable support system has proven to be priceless to me as they are always there to help. I am grateful for their presence in my life and I recognize the immense importance of surrounding myself with individuals who uplift and inspire me.

So, for those who may not fully grasp the significance of this, I aim to shed light on the empowerment that comes from being a determined individual equipped with the right knowledge. Perhaps my insights can offer guidance to individuals navigating their own paths towards success.
