We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Drj Royster a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Drj, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Talk to us about building your team? What was it like? What were some of the key challenges and what was your process like?
I began my mental health employment working in a psychiatric hospital, then residential treatment facilities, I worked with human traffic survivors, then community mental health, Once I acquired my independent licensure, I worked a several large organizations. During my service in the Air Force, my best friend died by suicide, and I continued to struggle with those post traumatic symptoms for 25 years before I realized I needed therapy. Once I began my mental health journey seeking treatments, I had realized during my upbringing and my own marriage I had betrayal trauma. Realizing this, talk therapy was not a good fit for me. I could not find the treatment I need; I received training in as many modalities I could find. I created some interventions that alleviated my symptoms, which at this point were extremely severe. Once I realized you can heal from post-traumatic stress symptoms and no longer have those intense reactions I developed the Trauma Recovery Intervention Protocol. I began working diligently with those who served the community and the country and found amazing results.
I realized after I began receiving referrals from police departments, sheriff’s offices, and veteran non-profit resources. I worked alone under my company for over a year. Once the referrals began to increase to a level I could not treat on my own, I pursued others who served and were licensed therapists.
I met several individuals who served our country and our community who wanted to be part of my company. Two of my contractors are from grad school, some I met through other organizations and police departments. I believe my providers would be considered unconventional and so are my clients. The clients are unique and require extraordinary techniques to assist them with alleviating their trauma symptoms. Most of the contractors/employees are referred by trusted agents. I am very diligent with the interview process, and I want to ensure the community I am providing therapy for are well educated and able to handle the clientele that we see at Semper Motis LLC. I love what we have created, and I look forward to seeing what comes next!

Drj, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are therapists who have served our country and/or our community that serve those who served or continue to serve. The main reason I began this company was due to my inability to find healing through traditional methods. I’m proud of my team and I can trust them with the clients. Veterans are taking their lives daily and we have a myriad of therapists who specialize in areas that are specifically for those who serve. We have a diplomat in hypnosis, a narcissist expert, anxiety and depression expert, marriage and family therapist, child therapist, serious mental health therapist, grief and loss therapist, and those who specialize in alleviating trauma symptoms.
I am proud of the ability to access those who actively serve in special operations, those who have retired or separated from their professions, as well as their families. We take most insurance. Therapists are licensed in multiple states which allows us to treat more clients through telehealth. Semper Motis has the ability to serve a myriad of clients with different challenges they face on a daily basis. We do use traditional talk therapy if the client requests to work through their issues using those modalities. We are here to serve in the best way that assists the clients in the way they need to heal and thrive. We serve civilians as well, needing the expertise we provide.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I was approached by a media person who is a veteran supporter. As I was able to engage with her more and more, she shared with me her dream of having a veteran podcast. I decided I would love to create a podcast; however, I have minimal technology skills, my zoom is literally my phone number. We decided to call the podcast “A journey in Boots; From Trauma to Triumph”. We created a podcast to highlight those service members, fireman, and police officers who thrive in the face of their trauma. Climbing that uphill battle of their symptoms and how they overcame their challenges. The podcast is relatively new and can be found on YouTube, Roku, Facebook live, and LinkedIn. My cohost created a media station and has several other shows.
I have been a part of Project Vet Relief which is the nonprofit arm of the American Legion which offers support to small nonprofits who focus on suicide prevention of veterans. This has created a unique opportunity to meet those individuals who have been highlighted on the podcast.
I would suggest meeting those who are experts in their field and discuss ways you can help each other to attain the goals in branching out on social media and the internet.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The best way to explain this would be referrals. Clients who have achieved relief from their symptoms and recognize the education in our providers. Most of our clients are based on referrals from those who have been treated. They feel relief and share with their colleagues or friends that they recognize they need help. People in our community are not very trusting and someone who sought treatment attain relief and can see the difference, they trust that we at Semper Motis can assist them and reach out for services.
