We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Roman Cabaong a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Roman, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I discovered my passion for acting at the young age of six playing in Bye Bye Birdie as a sweet apple townsperson with Center Stage Productions: a local theatre production company in Escondido CA. As I continued to immerse myself in theatre year and year, I found myself drawn to the world of storytelling and embodying characters to life and the thrill of captivating audiences. Even as a young kid I enjoyed entertaining my family and friends with improvised performances and so it would be where my love and enthusiasm grew for acting.
At the age of fifteen after many years of my youth on stage I felt ready to venture to Hollywood. I joined the Conservatory at Gary Spatz The Playground where I began to study and develop as an actor for film and TV. Simultaneously, I still enjoyed performing for my local theatre in productions such as The Addams Family, Once on this Island and Aida just to name a few.
After completing my 2-year conservatory I continued to immerse myself in improv and acting classes with the direction and mentorship of Wendy Alane Wright where I gained knowledge on the business side of acting. During this time I continued to act, play drums and work on my martial arts.
Although, I am well known for playing Leon and other characters on the hit You Tube Series Dhar Mann; I courageously focused my attention on my passion for writing a script for my very first short film ‘What I Want’ in collaboration with Jig Reel Productions. To my amazement ‘What I Want’ has been highly recognized and awarded Best Shorts Competition and Best Drama at the Hawaii International Film Awards as well as being nominated Best Young Actor at the Cannes World Film Festival.
This entire experience has been greatly inspiring as I continue to do what I passionately love and I am truly honored and grateful for all the opportunities going forward and to be able to share it with audiences around the world .

Roman, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Roman Cabaong. I’m an actor who enjoys martial arts and playing drums.
I am most proud of the connections and mentors in my life that have guided me along the way. I am lucky to have a supportive family that have immersed me in my Filipino cultural roots.
In my spare time I enjoy cooking, travel, spending time with my friends and making others laugh. That makes me happy.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to use my writing, musical skills and martial arts expertise to create a dynamic performance for my audience. I also learn so much from being around other creative people in the industry. They have continued to play a significant role in my personal and professional growth.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to continue to be dedicated and develop as an artist on and off screen and look forward to working with renowned filmmakers guiding my path to director someday. I feel I have accomplished so much as a young person, but my life is just beginning. It’s been a great journey.
