We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Costa Gava. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Costa below.
Costa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When you have limited resources it can be challenging making something of quality. I tend to take unconventional approaches to recording like using my car as a vocal booth. Which is where I started by layering vocals over free beats on YouTube. Soon after I got bored with the LoFi tunes popular at the time and started to use the drum kits and synths on GarageBand. For a few years most of my work sounded messy and was basically unlistenable but I enjoyed the process of working on a drum pattern and morphing it to sound like something completely different. I enjoyed putting in the work and having an end product I could listen to and critique. I moved onto Logic X and focused my attention on EQs, Compressors, and limiters. Keeping it simple always works out in the end technically. I’m far from where I’d like to be and I’m learning everyday how to be better. Engineering and producing has helped me express myself in ways I never thought I could and the journey has been incredibly fulfilling. I’m grateful for my friends Ethan Kline (TheEklipze) and Gabe Lininger (1221 Productions). Last year I put out a record with Ethan for our band Metropolis! It was a huge learning experience that taught me so much about the technical world and finishing an LP. Both Ethan and Gabe have pushed me to be better and work harder. They inspire me to be a better person and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Music, Fashion, and Art is my world. My dad introduced me to artists like Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Björk, and Donna Summer when I was a kid. I remember he’d always play everything from Progressive Rock to Electronic House. His taste opened my ears up to so many amazing genres. I’m inspired by cinema styling similar to what Patricia Fields does. I used to combine pop music videos with alternative music to see how it would feel to look at. I take a similar approach with visual aesthetics and the music I make. The future is a Sub Genre of a Sub Genre. I always assumed you needed a team to be able to put out material until I moved to California at 19. Soon after I realized you can do it on your own. I’ve always been self sufficient when it came to making my physical art. I just want to make something someone can escape to. I do my own Engineering/Producing , Styling, Writing, and Filming. One day I hope to make a Music Video with Francis Lawrence, Jonas Åkerlund, Rankin, and Steven Klein. Make an album with Max Martin, Bloodshy & Avant, The Neptunes, Kaytranada, and Mucky. And lastly shoot a campaign with my hero David LaChapelle.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I always say it’s like playing with Play-Doh. There are no rules and no limits. I’m able to go anywhere and do anything with my creativity. Everyone needs that kind of freedom and I hope people are able to find what takes them there.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I just want to keep evolving as an artist while creating my dream world sonically and visually. I have an album coming out this year titled Extended Play that is the beginning of my story.
