We recently connected with Miles Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Miles thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I was so excited when I got my first client. Actually, before I got my first client. I was excited because I knew I would make a sale that day. One of the things I do in my business is to help people communicate effectively and with confidence in public settings. This is something that many people need, but business owners especially need it because marketing is the lifeline of a business, and all marketing is, is communicating effectively to your target audience. So, when I had the chance to give a 20 min presentation at a business conference full of business owners (part of my target audience) I knew I would get new clients if only I could communicate effectively on that stage.
The DJ started playing music, they read a little bio about me and called my name, and I danced my way to that stage! I danced knowing that I was about to say something good, say something to help the people. And because I would help the people, somebody would want to pay me for my services. I still get excited about that today.
My presentation was all about the reasons business owners should learn to speak in public settings and how to get past fears of speaking. I talked about positioning, getting paid to speak, and I even told them that if they do a good job speaking, then they should be able to get new clients from the audience. And like clockwork, when I got done speaking a lady walked up to me and said something to the effect of “Miles I need to be in your class. Whatever it cost I need it.” She was not the only one, I got multiple clients that day and that was the first time I made more than $1,000 in my business in one day. It was a good day that I will not soon forget.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a person who did not know that he was valuable. I did not think highly of myself. And I thought the gifts I had were basic and not something to think much of. As I grew older, I learned that everybody is special, including myself, some of us just don’t know it. I learned that some of the things that came natural to me, like communicating and teaching, were gifts given to me so that I could help others.
So now I have a business that uses my gift of communication to educate, and I do that via keynote presentations and workshops. I also teach people on a one-on-one level how they can do an amazing job communicating in public settings, and how they can leverage their new abilities to communicate to further their careers.
One of the amazing things I get to see when helping people learn to communicate is the overall confidence that a person has in themself skyrocket. Public speaking is one of the biggest fears for Americans, so learning to overcome that actually has an impact on many other areas of a persons life. One of the things I am most proud of is the very first student I helped get paid just to talk. It was the confidence she had when she went about it that made me smile. She spoke for 10 minutes and received $300 just because she learned how to communicate. The fact that I taught her how to craft her talk, then taught her how she could get compensated for it made me feel like I got paid for it. It wasn’t a ton of money, but it was real money, hundreds of dollars, for minutes of work. The very first student of mine to get paid from what they learned from me.
The main thing I want everyone to walk away with is to “DO SOMETHING GOOD” those three words are the core of my business. I believe that selfishness creates the world we hate. But I also believe that when we are intentional about the good that we do, we can create a world we love. Everything in my business somehow needs to be good for somebody. When we do good for others, it helps them feel better so that they can do good for themselves and someone else. It creates a cycle of good. So, find somebody and find a way to do something good.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The way I enjoy most is from giving keynote presentations. Keynote presentations are amazing for gaining new clients because unlike running an ad on social media, I don’t have just 2 seconds to catch your attention. Unlike email marketing, I’m not wondering if you opened or truly gave thought to what I sent in an email. With a keynote presentation I have 30 min to an hour of your undivided attention. It gives me time to explain how I am the answer to your problems. It gives me time to build KLT (Know Like & Trust) with you. It gives me time to prove that I am actually good at what I do. As a result, I usually have somebody in the audience who wants to communicate better and even more people who wish they could get paid to speak. I always have the person who brought me in to give the keynote presentation to give me a referral, which leads to another keynote, and on top of that, I get paid to give a keynote. It is kind of like getting paid to run an ad for another part of my business. I can’t really think of anything better than that.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was that I need to be perfect or even good to move forward. That was something I picked up watching what I thought were phenomenal businessmen and women and from listening to people I should have never listened to about any business related topics. When I saw them, I thought that I had to be as sharp and as polished as they were if I ever wanted to make a dollar. The result of that thinking is paralysis by analysis. Not doing anything because you are spending time looking over and perfecting everything. What I would eventually learn through mentorship is that many great people in business were NOT perfect or even good when they got started. But they got started. They accepted being bad, then good, then special in whatever their business was. One of the best things anybody can do to make money is to just get started and be willing to learn and fail forward. You should always get better, but you should never let knowing you need to be better stop you from moving forward. You’d be surprised how many people were far from perfect when they started making money
