We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christian Busch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
A very defining moment in my professional career occurred during my time spent in Tucson, AZ. I had moved there to seek out mentorship so that I could improve my ability to diagnosis conditions and further my hands-on skills with patients. I trained there for several years and really enjoyed gaining the knowledge I needed training under my mentor. After I had completed most of my training, I began to realize I could not practice the way I wanted to with my patients. I would see 2-3 patients per hour; this patient volume did not allow me to provide the best care. At that point, I decided to start my own physical therapy practice where I would only see one patient per hour so I could give them the time and attention needed for the best treatment. I reached out to a fellow classmate from professional school, and he felt similarly. That is when we decided to start our business together in Asheville, NC.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back, I would absolutely be a physical therapist again. The only thing that I would change, would be starting a business right out of school. It has been such a wonderful experience being a business owner and being able to treat patients on our terms, which is very patient centered for the highest quality treatment. I think I would have started getting business mentoring while I was still a student so that I would be ready to start a business as soon as possible after graduation.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start?
This is something we are quite proud of because a lot of business have to go into a great deal of debt to start their own business. Fortunately, for physical therapy the overhead is low because we are using our hands primarily for the treatment. Both Ryan and I were able to bring together personal funds to be able to pay for rent, equipment (treatment tables, exercise equipment, etc), and marketing without requiring any loan from a bank. We started in a small shared space, inside a gym, for a low rent. We were able to finally move into a more private space as we grew the business, and we were even able to hire another physical therapist to help women’s health patients.
