NorthStar was born out of a deeply personal journey that fundamentally transformed my life and gave me a renewed sense of purpose. In 2021, after leaving the Marine Corps, moving to Austin for law school, and going through a divorce, I found myself in a place where my identity felt shattered. The roles and titles that once defined me were stripped away, leaving me searching for something to help me rebuild my sense of self.
Fitness became that anchor for me. It was no longer just a physical activity or a requirement but a personal journey of rediscovery. I immersed myself in CrossFit, participated in local competitions, and even ran the Marine Corps Marathon despite having yet to run a half or full marathon. Each day of dedicated training was a step towards reclaiming my identity, proving that I had control over my life and decisions. Through this process, I learned to take pride in who I was and what I could achieve by showing up with intention every single day. This transformation was pivotal—I earned my CrossFit Level I certification, ran an ultra-marathon, and started my business, all while managing the demands of being a full-time law student.
The creation of NorthStar was inspired by a desire to provide better choices in the health and wellness space. One particular incident before a CrossFit class where I experienced the adverse effects of a poorly formulated pre-workout product made me realize how much the industry needed change. Most pre-workouts on the market are over-caffeinated and lack the necessary ingredients that genuinely support fitness goals. Witnessing people’s dedication to their fitness routines, I felt they deserved supplements that matched their efforts—products that promote longevity and overall well-being rather than quick fixes and flashy promises.

With 20 veterans dying by suicide each day, the impact of K9s for Warriors is profound—92% of participants reduce or eliminate prescription medications, and 82% report reduced daily suicidal ideation. While many brands heavily invest in online advertising, I’ve found that hitting the ground at in-person events has been the most effective strategy for growing our clientele at NorthStar Nutrition. Participating in events like Austin FitFest, the Rogue Invitational, The Fittest Experience, and even setting up a booth at local gyms allows me to achieve two critical objectives: making personal connections and giving potential customers the opportunity to sample our products.
These in-person interactions are invaluable. The personal connections I make help to build trust and loyalty, something that is difficult to achieve through digital ads alone. When people see an ad online, they often scroll past it, especially given the oversaturation of the supplement market. However, face-to-face interactions provide an opportunity to explain why NorthStar Nutrition is different, share our story, and let people taste the difference in our products. This direct engagement often converts curious individuals into loyal customers who appreciate the transparency, quality, and effectiveness of our supplements.
Moreover, participating in these events is cost-effective compared to digital marketing campaigns. I’ve found that while digital marketing can be costly and yield minimal returns, in-person events typically cover their costs and then some. This approach not only helps in building a local customer base but also allows for immediate feedback and direct connection with the community.

Your purchase not only supports your wellness journey, but also contributes to K9s for Warriors’ mission.” Beneath this, I add a handwritten note, often personalized based on previous interactions or the customer’s activity on social media. This small but meaningful gesture shows customers their support is valued and helps create a lasting personal connection.
Many of these online orders come from people I’ve met at in-person events or those who follow our social media channels. By acknowledging these connections in my thank-you notes, I reinforce the personal touch that sets NorthStar Nutrition apart. This focus on personalization has contributed significantly to maintaining a high rate of return customers and fostering a sense of community among our clients.
Additionally, as I develop new products, I actively engage with my loyal customers by involving them in the process. For instance, I recently reached out to some of my most dedicated clients to help taste test potential new product flavors.
