We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Randy Whelmarc . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Randy below.
Randy , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Creative production manager for Prince
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a child I was deeply intrigued by theatrical illusion : magic . I can remember as early as eight yrs old creating staged magic shows for the neighborhood in my parents living room , a friends house or anywhere I could organize a “production”!
A few years later I was performing for church activities , birthday parties and local restaurants in my hometown of Baltimore Maryland . At age 14 I scored a job at a magic shop The Funhouse thanks to its generous owner Mr Lou Walston.. during my years at the magic shop I also assisted maintaining an event venue (tremaine catering hall) , worked at a local radio station, appeared regularly on WJZTV’s Evening Magazine and PM Magazine tv programs and performed with a nightclub troop show.
During my Senior year of high school i was granted a college transfer leading to my Theatre degree . I was now working with theatrical fabrication shops creating stage sets for musicals , Pop bands, etc. while performing for stage and nightclub shows .
I was granted a scholarship at UMKC where I obtained my masters in theatre then located back to Baltimore. Soon I assisted in the set design for Aerosmiths “love in an elevator” tour. . During all of this I thoroughly enjoyed performing randomly wherever I was. This landed me many additional opportunities.
Did I make mistakes : yes but I still connected with everyone . Eventually I found myself in Miami, Minnesota and California creating spectacular effects for pop icon, Prince .
I’ve always created with passion. Often a prop is created and recreated many times before it’s seen by an audience .
During my endeavors I have met so many others who have given up because of one or a few stumbles. Some allow frustration to defeat their dreams. Some people start each day new and determined . I’ve met many successful people and they have all made mistakes but never let that control them.
Today as I work with my cast and crew on my latest endeavor “Magic and Magic and Models” I share that determination with them . We work for weeks on a 30 second scene ! In a time when we are in a world where major productions have a 30 million dollar budget that we don’t have but we have passion! Good writing can always win over a high budget spectacle! Those who know me well know that creating a dream , a heart felt dream is my passion . I never let that go !
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience! If I may quote Lionel Richie “ Artists , we wrote the book on poverty”!
I was raised in a blue collar family , in the depressed town of Dundalk Maryland . There was little to no support from my family . Even through my achievements I was dismissed as worthless by my father . My mother insisted that I never speak of my financial gains to my father who would not accept it and possibly react jealously .
At times I was living well , at times I was living in poverty . Either way I was happy with my passion . To this day I wake up excited for the projects in my folder . I’ve often put trust in others who have stolen from me . I can’t thrive on it and I have to much going on let it consume me . I still believe in people and have some great stars working on my team ! Those who take don’t have a passion . Those who give share a passion . I give as much as I can to my cast and crew . Some have been with me for years and I consider them
my family !
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal ! My driving goal is to create a long running original show! I’ve been working meticulously on the Magic and Models project for the past ten years . It’s a 14 episode tv series backed by a live touring show ! I’ve assembled a core team of dedicated professionals ,writers ,actors , performers . We work everyday and at times through the night ! We have had mountains of failure , rejection but just as much success and compliments !
We work hard , we laugh and cry together ! One of my co-stars , Suzdariffe David , has worked with me for years while going through her personal up and downs .she owns everything she does and makes the journey easier ! Actor Axel Aponte has been working through this project with me for many years also ! They have been positive and supportive through everything! I believe in them as well as the many others committed to this project ! “Surround yourself with positive people “ that’s important !
