We recently connected with David and Julie Bulitt and have shared our conversation below.
David and Julie, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Between the two of us, we have spent 75 years working with folks, listening to their struggles and – from different perspectives. At the same time, we have weathered our own challenges at home: raising four daughters, two biological and two adopted, and dealing with one child’s mental health and behavioral issues as well as financial setbacks. Our mission – if you want to call it that – is to share what we have learned, where we have succeeded and where we have failed – in the hope that our experiences, both professional and personal, can help couples navigate their own relationship minefields.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
What makes us different from all the relationship “experts” out there? Its easy.
A licensed clinical social worker, Julie Bulitt has spent more than 25 years working with individuals, couples and families. Her private practice focuses on family, couples and individual therapy, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and Executive Functioning coaching. In addition to her private practice, Julie previously served as the in-house therapist for Warner Bros/ Discovery’s DC metro location and is presently a clinical supervisor for The Center for Adoption Support and Education in suburban Maryland.
David Bulitt is a partner in the Washington DC Metro law firm of Joseph, Greenwald & Laake, PA. He has repeatedly been chosen as one of the Washington area’s top divorce lawyers by multiple publications, recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” and a Washington DC Metro “Super Lawyer.” Praised as “the lawyer who epitomizes stability and old fashioned common sense” by Bethesda Magazine, David has a particular interest in families with special needs children as a result of personal experiences in his own family. He is a published author of two fiction novels, multiple articles in legal publications and has appeared as a special guest on several local television shows.
We are closing in on 40 years of marriage. We have four daughters and three grandchildren. Most recently, we launched ‘Conversations for Couples – The Podcast” and are the authors of two commercially published and award winning books, The Five Core Conversations for Couples in 2020 and Secrets of Strong Couples in 2023. A Master Class series on relationships and additional couples coaching opportunities are presently in the works and should be available by fall 2024.
Frequent speakers at corporate events and couples retreats, we lean in on and share our insights – garnered from decades of professional and personal experiences – in an intimate, yet informal and humor filled fashion.
We are regular guests on television, podcasts and radio. What we have listened to, struggled through, and learned about saving a marriage, keeping a family together, or knowing when to call it quits, when to turn to professionals, or when to try tough love, it’s all fair game – on our podcast, in our books and upcoming programs, speaking events, presentations and coaching sessions.
How’d you meet your business partner?
We tell this one all the time. David was a senior and Julie a freshman at The University of Maryland. Both of us went out one Saturday night to a fraternity party on campus, David with friends and Julie because her then boyfriend stood her up. Both of us saw the other from across the room, David promptly plied Julie with a couple of rounds of “two for one” cocktails. Julie would say it was love at first sight -for David, it was more lust at first sight. We have been together ever since.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Both of us already had reputations in our respective professions well before we decided to embark on this venture together. Our perspectives and vantage points are often quite different, but the fact that we bring years of both professional and personal experience to the table when it comes to couples and relationships certainly reinforces our experience and expertise.
