We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristin Marquet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’ve all been there before where things are tight financially and we start asking ourselves in the small/simple joys like a cup of coffee is worth it. Have you had an experience like this and if so how did you think about this sort of spending?
Thank you for the opportunity.
When I was first starting out or during particularly tough times, I didn’t make drastic cuts to essential self-care or productivity-related expenses, but I did re-evaluate my spending habits in other areas. Instead of cutting out coffee or other small self-care indulgences that help maintain my productivity and well-being, I focused on reducing unnecessary expenses like excessive shopping and entertainment. These cuts allowed me to allocate more resources to my business without sacrificing the daily routines that keep me grounded and efficient. Balancing self-care with financial prudence was key to navigating those lean times successfully.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Strategic Partnerships:
Collaborations: Partnering with industry influencers and other businesses has significantly expanded my reach. These collaborations provide mutual benefits and help in tapping into new customer bases.
Networking: Active participation in industry events, webinars, and online communities has been crucial. It helps me connect with potential clients and establish my authority in the industry.
Strong Online Presence:
Content Marketing: Creating high-quality content that addresses the pain points of my target audience has attracted and engaged potential clients. This strategy’s key components are blog posts, social media updates, and newsletters.
SEO and SEM: Optimizing my websites (FemFounder.co, MarquetCreative.co, and MarquetMagazine.com) for search engines and running targeted ads have driven significant traffic and leads.
Client Referrals and Testimonials:
Referral Programs: Encouraging existing clients to refer others through incentives has been highly effective. Satisfied clients are often the best advocates.

By combining these strategies, I have grown my clientele effectively, ensuring a steady flow of new business while maintaining strong relationships with existing clients.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of my most significant pivots was when I shifted from primarily offering PR services to creating and selling online courses, high-level 1:1 consulting, and marketing and branding templates through a membership program.
The Initial Challenge
When I first started Marquet Media, my primary focus was on providing comprehensive PR services to a range of clients. While this was rewarding and allowed me to leverage my expertise in public relations, I soon realized that the market was becoming increasingly saturated. Additionally, the nature of PR work often involved high-stress situations and demanding schedules, which affected my work-life balance.
The Spark of an Idea
During this period, I noticed a recurring theme among my clients: many needed help maintaining consistent branding and marketing efforts. They often needed more time or resources to create high-quality content, crucial for effective communication and brand building. This observation sparked an idea: what if I could provide ready-made, customizable templates that would simplify this process for them?
The Pivot
With this idea in mind, I began developing a range of marketing and branding templates. These templates covered everything from social media posts and email newsletters to business planners and client onboarding kits. The goal was to create a complete toolkit to empower small businesses, entrepreneurs, and creatives to enhance their brand presence without extensive resources.
Building the Membership Program
The next step was to package these templates into a membership program. This was a significant pivot from my original business model. Instead of providing one-on-one services, I offer a scalable product that could reach a broader audience. I launched the membership program on MarquetCreative.co, where subscribers could access thousands of templates tailored to various industries, including real estate, real estate investing, interior design, coaching, fashion, beauty, and sustainable brands.
Leveraging Technology
I integrated an AI-driven tech tool into the program to differentiate my offering. This tool assists members with branding, marketing, PR, social media, and sales funnel strategies, providing real-time insights and recommendations. This technological addition enhanced the value of the membership and positioned my business as a forward-thinking, tech-enabled solution provider.
The Outcome
The pivot was a game-changer. The membership program quickly gained traction, attracting a diverse range of subscribers. It allowed me to scale my business without the constant pressure of client deadlines and provided a more balanced lifestyle. Additionally, it opened up new revenue streams through platforms like Etsy and CreativeMarket.com, where I also sell individual template packs.
Key Takeaways
This experience taught me the importance of staying attuned to market needs and being willing to adapt. I could pivot successfully and create a sustainable, scalable business model. It reinforced my belief in the power of innovation and the value of providing solutions that genuinely address the pain points of my target audience.
