Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karla Karla Garcia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karla , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
In my life, I have taken many risks to get where I am. I was studying political science in school. At the time, I was working for a bank and wanted to pursue accounting. I read a book on accounting, despite not knowing anything about it. Afterward, I went to an interview and got the job thanks to the book. Since then, I have been in accounting for over 20 years and have worked in many management positions in the field. I also opened a bakery with no prior experience, but I am making it work. If you don’t take risks, you will never know your potential.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Karla Garcia. I immigrated from Nicaragua when I was 13 years old. My family and I came to this great country seeking liberty. Our country is under a terrible dictatorship where freedom of speech is censored. I have two kids and a wonderful husband who supports me in all my endeavors. I also opened a non-profit organization. I’m not a domestic violence survivor, but I have seen violence in my life. I’m a civil war survivor. In the baking classes I teach through my company, I have encountered many students who are victims of domestic violence. With the support of my husband, I opened a non-profit to help these women and make a difference in their lives.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One piece of advice I would give to anyone in today’s business world is to invest in Google Ads and find someone who can help with marketing. This has definitely helped me increase my business.
I feel lucky that I have had many organizations supporting me during my journey. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in San Francisco helped me with my non-profit. The CLECHA organization has been instrumental; they have found grants to better my business and helped me with many San Francisco small business programs to thrive. No one is like CLECHA. MEDA, another organization, has helped me with a business plan and grants as well. CALLE 24 is another force; their constant support of my business has made me popular in the Latino community. I think I’m the luckiest person alive to be surrounded by such great organizations.
A great piece of advice is to read a lot and search for organizations in your area. Find out who your competition is. I don’t think I have competition, in all honesty. I feel everyone is unique. My services are unique. My competition is myself.
