We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Wright . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Jessica , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I recently had a client who was getting a memorial tattoo for her late aunt. It was a large piece, so over months while my client was in my chair, she would share stories of her aunt and family with me. In conversation, we were talking about fashion, and I had mentioned to her that I was on a never ending hunt for a certain type of jacket that seemed to not exist. When we finished her tattoo, she gifted me with the best tip I could have imagined – she gave me the exact jacket that I had told her about, which belonged to her late aunt. It was an emotional moment for her and she said that she wanted me to have it and I was honored to memorialize her aunt, and to have a piece of her to remind me of this special moment.
Jessica , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been tattooing in Edmonton for almost 20 years and I have seen the industry change drastically. I pride myself on helping others grow under my brand and I strive to have my studio be a safe and welcoming space for clients and artists alike. I think that being goal oriented as an artist is important in our industry as it is ever changing. Continuing to move forward and excel will allow for an artist to give their clients the best experience with an art form that lasts a lifetime. I recently hosted a seminar to share my knowledge and skills with budding artists and it was nice to share my experience and pay it forward!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I began on social media very early on. At the start, it was simply tagging pages to get my work seen but it has become something very different. I believe that my customer base likes to see my artwork, but more so, wants to see my day to day life. I make an effort to showcase the fun that I have with my staff as often as I can. If I had any advice to someone using a social media platform for marketing, it would be to keep it lighthearted. Don’t stress over having to post something everyday as it just becomes watered down that way. Be real, and be genuine. Interact with your base and it will be rewarded at the end of the day!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My industry is based mainly on word of mouth. I make an effort to engage with my clientele on a professional, and a personal level. A tattoo is a very personal experience so I make sure to give every one of my clients 110% of my energy. It is important for me to listen to them, not just with their tattoo needs, but when they want to share with me the stories of their lives or the things that they might be stressing about. Getting tattooed and enduring a painful session can be a good reset of the mind when you have an artist who is willing to listen, and walk you through both the process and any other struggles you might be facing.
