We recently connected with Mason Marsh and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mason, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The beauty and also pressure associated with pursuing any type of craft is the fact that you’re always learning.
With every movement, opportunity, or project I feel as if we are growing and learning more about what it is that makes us, well, us.
Being in the field to any degree and witnessing others along the same path is both exciting and inspiring, while also bringing a sense of wonder if I’m doing things correctly or could be doing better.
Thankfully I know the idea is to do things your own way, but also take influence and tie it back into the bundle.
Some days are better than others wondering if we’re doing enough, or executing a show, promotion, or project in the best way possible.
Life is just a learn as you go, trial and error, type of motion. I’m beginning to realize that it’s okay to feel the give and pull of that, because the goal and reality is, we are always going to be learning.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are Sun Jelly. A fuzzy Southern California garage project whose intentions are to melt faces, ring ears, and capture whatever energy we can with hopes to have others feel the same.
The project is made up of long time friends Mason Marsh, and Joseph Campos. Originally starting a group together in late high school while living in Ventura County. Being gifted with the opportunity to bounce off each other constantly creating new flows of ideas and works, traveling to new places to play, and meeting new long term friendships along the way.
Now almost 10 years later, moving to San Diego together, still doing the same motions but trying to redefine and dial it in more as we enter a new milestone/chapter in our book.
Earning many core opportunities and experiences along the way, from countless DIY shows, to playing venues we had seen acts we looked up to make their rounds. While recording many different types of projects from garage cassette tapes to full blown studios. Our goal is to make the most of what we have to offer, and hope others can feel it too.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I feel the most rewarding factor for me, is being able to express my art to a wider audience, and given the chance to do things / go places I would never have otherwise.
Being a performing band there are many random bars, parties, or people I have met that in any other situations I would never have experienced.
Reflecting on that I am forever grateful for this project I have invested so much time and energy into. It makes it all worth while.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I was thinking about this idea earlier.
It’s personally hard for me to think from a perspective of someone who isn’t pursuing a creative project. I have always been so absorbed and overwhelmed with my projects and the thoughts of “am I doing enough?” “Is this the best I can do?” “What can I do better?” “How can I level up?”.
It’s good to step back and reflect on what you have done, while being thankful and proud of how much you have accomplished. Celebrate all wins, no matter the size compared to others. This is your win to celebrate.
I think it’s hard to express that to an outside force when all they see, especially through social media, is all the ups. But no one discusses the balancing lows that accompany the creatives journey. I think my advise I need to continue telling myself, and other creatives, is that it’s okay to not always feel 100% or your best. If you’re creating, or atleast trying, enjoying and believe in yourself, in whatever you do, that’s a win in my book.
