We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Melissa Steach, PhD. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Steach below.
Dr. Steach, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I often ask myself this and the overall answer is neither. Where I am today is an accumulation of the many mistakes, missteps, meaningful considerations, and magical moments that are sometimes apparent only after they’ve passed. My career today is a beautiful amalgamation of all the work I’ve done – now in service to support the work of others. So no, I would not change a thing.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an artist, author, and industrial-organizational psychologist. I’ve spent as much time studying and working as an artist as I have studying and working as an academic and professional. I love people and I love work. I believe that work facilitates our life – and this is why you must make your work matter: to you and the people you love. My work as a creative, consultant, and coach is designed to empower people to level up and lean in to the work they do today so that they can fulfill their Life’s work.
Bills are friggin’ real! Most people have jobs doing work they don’t love, yet they do it to support something or someone they do. There’s pride in that and there’s power in that.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
A few years ago, I received a LinkedIn message from someone offering to do a course with me. Rather than ignore what might’ve been a sales ploy, I decided to respond. Turns out it was a legitimate request and as a result, I created my first LinkedIn Learning course! In two years, my course “Compassionate Leadership” has more than 27,000 learners and counting! This course has introduced me to professionals across the globe. I make sure to personally congratulate every learner who posts their certification on LinkedIn. My belief is that everyone who enjoys my work is an extension of my sales team. Even if they are not ready to become a paying client, their experience with my quality product and gratitude will encourage them to speak well of my brand and services – and that will turn into a sale somewhere down line.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Recommendations from previous clients is my best source of new clients. Whatever I agree to do for work, I commit to do it well. There have been times in my career where I’ve taken jobs I didn’t really like because I needed the money. But that was my choice and therefore it was my responsibility to do that job with integrity. If I hated the job, I still gave it my all until I was able to move on to something that was better suited to me. This intentionally has served me well over time as I’ve been able to amass a strong professional network and supportive community.
