We speak with so many brilliant folks across dozens of industries and when those folks happen to be working for someone else, sometimes we can’t help but wonder why they aren’t working for themselves. How do folks decide between joining a firm or starting their own? We posed the question to the community and have shared some of their responses below.
Lauren McAlpin Miller

After graduating law school I made the decision, like most of my peers, to start working for a law firm. During the first several years of practice I represented athletes and entertainers in everything from their business contracts to their complex divorce matters. Aaron Chavez

I began my career in investment banking in 2016 and quickly learned that while the work was interesting, I was not interested in making it a lifelong career. It was too much process and not enough strategic thought in my mind, and I felt like a very small cog in an extremely large machine. I knew I wanted to be more involved in the business building process and have more meaningful impact with my day to day work. I left banking in 2019 and launched a boutique consulting firm based in Miami, Florida called Argent Strategies which focuses on providing business planning, financial strategy, and capital raising preparation to startups, small businesses, and web3 projects. When I was first starting out I did join a law firm I made the right choice because it’s the nations largest‘s personal injury firm with mass marketing and huge attorney team. the backstory was myself working jobs just to make it by, knowing I’m not loving what I’m doing and hating to work every day, yet through my education certificate and interning at smaller firms I was able to understand and appreciate working for a large firm.
