We were lucky to catch up with Junda Wu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Junda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
First Narrative Film I ever made – Paranoid

Junda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I published my first Electronic Pop Album, Fight 4 Diamonds, in 2013, which received critical acclaim and won the Abilu Music Award for Best Electronic Album of the Year. This success marked the beginning of my journey in the music industry, where I not only produced and performed music but also directed music videos for my tracks.
Over the years, I expanded my expertise by collaborating with other artists as a Music Video Director, blending my musical vision with theirs to create visually compelling stories. In 2017, I founded Villyvon in Beijing, a company dedicated to producing innovative music videos and fashion films. Through Villyvon, I have been able to explore new creative territories and push the boundaries of visual storytelling.
My visual style is deeply influenced by the aesthetics of German Expressionism. This influence is evident in my use of stark color contrasts and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow. These elements are not merely decorative but serve as powerful storytelling tools, adding depth, dimension, and emotional resonance to the narratives I craft.
After more than a decade of directing music videos and fashion films, I ventured into narrative filmmaking with my first short film, Paranoid. This film is a culmination of my artistic journey, seamlessly integrating the musical and visual elements I have refined over the years. In Paranoid, I aimed to create a compelling narrative that engages the audience on both a visual and emotional level, showcasing my unique style and creative vision.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the ability to evoke emotions and tell compelling stories through my work. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see how my music and visual creations can resonate with people, sparking their imagination, eliciting feelings, and sometimes even inspiring them in their own lives. The process of bringing a vision to life, from a mere concept to a fully realized piece of art, is both challenging and exhilarating.
Another rewarding aspect is the continuous journey of learning and growth. Every project offers new opportunities to experiment with different techniques, explore new ideas, and collaborate with diverse talents. This constant evolution not only enhances my skills but also broadens my perspective, keeping my creative spirit invigorated.
Moreover, the recognition and appreciation from the audience and peers, such as winning the Abilu Music Award and China Golden Melody Awards or receiving positive feedback on my work, are deeply gratifying. These acknowledgments affirm the impact of my art and motivate me to keep pushing the boundaries of my creativity.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I aspire to win an Oscar. This ambition fuels my dedication to creating art that transcends conventional boundaries and deeply connects with people. My mission is to blend music and visual storytelling in a way that not only entertains but also provokes thought, evokes emotions, and sparks meaningful conversations.
