We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Juvylyn “Jhuvy” Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Juvylyn “Jhuvy” below.
Alright, Juvylyn “Jhuvy” thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Since I was a little girl, I have always loved art. It was fun to work on school art & craft projects. My Papa and I used to drop by & check out art galleries next to our school on our way home. We were always excited every time we saw new art displays. Nope, we never bought one; we couldn’t afford to buy one. My Papa would just ask the person in charge of the gallery if we could go in & just check out their display. We were always in awe of the paintings & I would wonder how the artists created such stunning pieces. It also made me wonder if I could ever do it myself. In high school, I wanted to join the arts club. I mentioned it to my Mama & she immediately said, “Nope! That is a very expensive hobby! You need to have a lot of different supplies & they’re expensive. Maybe not that! There’s a microphone; why don’t you just do that instead & sing if you’re bored?” From then on, I thought that I would never be able to even give it a try because I understood that we couldn’t afford it. Growing up, I had a lot of thoughts on what I could possibly be. It started out as wanting to become a nurse because I had this cute nurse doll with blonde hair & she was very pretty, so I thought I wanted to be a nurse just like my doll. Then I wanted to become a teacher because I was inspired by some of our teachers. I also thought of becoming an astronaut because I was fascinated by the planets, but I thought for sure my parents could not afford that! However, despite these ever-changing interests, there was always this love for art. With the little inexpensive art supplies, I had that my mama could only afford, I always had to put art in so many things like school papers or reports. They never got submitted without me designing the covers! Then, when I had my first job, the one thing I noticed that I missed a lot was our school’s art & craft projects! It just felt weird that I don’t get to do them anymore & everything in the office was based on whatever system that company established & for us to follow. I truly thought it was boring. Then, fast forward to when I was 34 years old. I met my husband online & when we were chatting, he asked me if I love art. I said yes, with enthusiasm & told him that I had never given it a try because… so I told him my whole story about the love for art, my story about me & my papa & what my mama told me when I was a kid. A year later, my daughter and I moved to the USA from the Philippines because I got married. One morning I saw a watercolor kit on our bookshelf. I was excited & I texted my husband because he was at work, wondering if it was something he bought maybe just saving it for someone to gift to? I wasn’t really expecting that he said it was for us to play & try! He said, “I saw that in the store & it reminded me of what you told me when you were a kid & was really interested to try doing some art but couldn’t.” And, he said “So yeah! Go ahead! Play with it!” Wow! I was 35 years old & that was in 2012 that I first ever held a quality watercolor set & a painting brush!!! I right away painted my first art piece with everything in mind flashing back on what to do or what technique to use based on videos or talks or books that I used to read or watched! I was so happy & I realized that art is truly my happy place. Beginning that day, I started my art journey. I am a self-taught watercolor & calligraphy artist & a paint maker. Every day is a learning process, every day I get excited to create & at some point, I wanted to learn something new because I strongly believed that there is nothing impossible if your heart is into it! Everything can be learned! So, in 2020, I started learning modern calligraphy as I wanted to incorporate inspirational thoughts into some of my paintings. I fell in love with calligraphy as I find it calming, therapeutic & very addicting. It took me away from watercolor painting for maybe two years. However, in those two years, there were times that I really missed doing watercolor art, but I just had that strong drive to master modern calligraphy well. Eventually, I went back to painting & also doing calligraphy at the same time. In 2021, I discovered handmade watercolor paints. I believed they’re expensive for me, so I thought, what if I’ll make them for my personal use & maybe sell the extra paints! So, I researched all about paint making for months & months! Then because I wanted to share or sell the extra paints that I made, I had to research the business aspect as well! It was a fun & exciting experience that I couldn’t believe to myself that okay here we go! Thanksgiving of 2021, I launched my first handmade watercolor collection! I have been using them for my calligraphy & watercolor paintings. Then some people on social media saw my paints, saw my art pieces that some of them reached out because they were interested & wanted to buy my paints! Sometimes people would reach out to me because they want to buy my art piece or a simple card I made for the holiday or birthdays or asked me if I could paint their purses as well because they saw me posted it on my social media. My art journey has been such a fun experience. It brings me so much joy to be able to have that creative freedom & at the same time being able to inspire others from what I do or through the art pieces I made. So, if you ask me when was the first time, I knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally? I believe personally, when I thought that I was ready & that point that I saw people making money from their art but then at the back of my mind was like wow, I could do better than this or mine is better than this! That was the point that I found that confidence that yep, maybe I could make money out of this too?! Yes, people will say do that first step! Whatever it is, just do it! Give it a try, you won’t know unless you tried it! Or just show up & put yourself out there! Yes, I get that but no, I don’t want to be embarrassed even just to myself! So, yes take that first step but learn, research, & prepare for that first step! Then the rest will be a learning process & just have to enjoy every moment, every ride of it.

Juvylyn “Jhuvy”, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello! My name is Jhuvy Wilson, and I am an artist who finds joy in watercolor and modern calligraphy. As a self-taught creator, I have embraced the vibrant world of paint-making, crafting handmade watercolor paints that are not only of high quality but also vegan-friendly.
My artistry extends to capturing the serene beauty of landscapes, the tranquil essence of waterscapes, and the intricate details of botanical art. Each piece I create is more than just a painting; it’s a narrative that holds dear memories and offers inspiration to others.
I believe that art is a beautiful journey of continuous learning and exploration. In 2021, I launched my first handmade watercolor collection, a testament to my belief that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible. My creations have since found a home in the hearts of many, as I offer both prints and original pieces, as well as the unique paints that bring them to life.
Whether through the colors on my palette or the words in my calligraphy, I strive to share the beauty I see in the world and the stories that each hue whispers.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As an artpreneur, my goal extends beyond the canvas and color palettes; it’s about kindling the creative spark in others. I believe that art is not just a profession or a hobby—it’s a way of life that enriches the soul and brings joy to everyday moments.
The term ‘starving artist’ often casts a shadow over the artistic pursuit, suggesting a path fraught with financial uncertainty. However, I stand as a beacon of hope against this stereotype, proving that one can thrive by following their passion. I would like to inspire others to embrace their artistic inclinations, whether as a full-time endeavor or a fulfilling side project. Art, in its essence, is a celebration of individuality and expression. It’s a universal language that connects us, a medium through which we share our innermost thoughts and emotions. By pursuing what we love, we not only nurture our own happiness but also inspire those around us to explore their own creative potential.
In my journey, I’ve learned that success is not measured solely by profit but by the lives we touch and the joy we spread. As I continue to create and share my work, I hope to empower others to pick up their brushes, to play with colors, and to discover the artist within. Let’s redefine the narrative of the ‘starving artist’ to one of abundance, where art is not just good for the soul, but also a viable path to happiness and fulfillment.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I find the greatest reward of being an artist lies in the power to inspire and leave a lasting impact on others. There’s a profound joy in knowing that my creations can evoke emotions, bring happiness, and rekindle cherished memories. My passion for painting landscapes and waterscapes is fueled by this connection; it allows me to transform fleeting moments into enduring art. These pieces serve as more than decor—they are windows to treasured times, inviting viewers to relive their beauty every day.
