We were lucky to catch up with Latanya Mumford recently and have shared our conversation below.
Latanya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
I was studying Computer Science at Baystate College in Massachusetts; while working part time as a receptionist at a Hair Salon.
This is when I had the opportunity to multi-task in many roles. I had the opportunity to assist Frank Xavier a well known stylist in the Industry.
Once I saw the transformation he made with peoples hair I had decided to discontinue studies at Baystate, and immediately enrolled at New England Hair Academy.
So, I began assisting while working the front office. I advanced so quickly from front desk to manager then Operations Manager by the time I was 23.
The advancement also gave me an opportunity to assist with opening other day spas in different states..
With this new role after graduating hair school I worked at many franchise stores to enhance color and cutting skills.
I moved to Georgia in 2002, and was able to enhance my skills as a nail tech, aesthetician and hair stylist because throughout my years experience and reciprocity allotted me a Master’s in Cosmetology.
I later returned back to school in 2022 to obtain my Massage License.
I have an Associates Degree in Science , and I am 32 credits from a Bachelors degree. I am so thrilled I took the path I did career wise.
Latanya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always did my friends hair in high school. But not until I started working in the environment did I really want to do and know more.
I am extremely proud of making, looking, and have people feel fabulous.
I would like my clients/ followers to know that my body work is customized. Not everyone massage is the same that is why I call myself a bodyworkologist.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Definitely the passion is the key.. Also enjoy working with the public
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Networking is a big thing. You need for people to know and love what u do.. word of mouth is huge.
