Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mara Lang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I had retired from 28 years in the military and was trying to decide just what my next chapter would look like. I really wanted to do something that I was passionate about and fed my soul. I had some ideas, but nothing exactly lined out. The one thing I knew was that it would be something where I could positively impact others as I love to help people. As I did some soul searching, I continued to gravitate back to natural health and wellness practices. I researched companies to see what their business models were, their philanthropic practices as well as the quality of their products. At every turn, I would run across a person who knew about the doTERRA company and/or the products and spoke highly of them. It seemed as if I was being steered to the place I belonged. The defining moment for me was when I ran into an old military friend who just so happened to be a wellness advocate for, you guessed it, the exact company I had been researching. We chatted over coffee and really dove deep into the wellness advocate opportunity and what it could look like for me. I learned so much from that conversation and it was that moment that I chose to pursue being a wellness advocate with doTERRA. Starting this business allowed me the opportunity to use my passion for helping to assist and educate others in finding natural solutions for their concerns.

Mara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a retired military veteran, mom and spouse. I have 2 young adult sons, My youngest is currently in college and soon to join the Air Force and my oldest is autistic and lives with us. For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to natural wellness, but I never guessed I would make it a business. After I retired, I did some soul searching to see what the next chapter looked like and what I really wanted to do. I kept coming back to natural wellness. As I researched more, I kept coming across Essential oils and their benefits as well as a company called doTERRA. It was right up my alley. Randomly, I ran into an old military friend who was a Wellness Advocate for doTERRA products. We chatted and I decided that this was the opportunity I had been looking for. As a Wellness Advocate, I educate and guide others to find wellness solutions using doTERRA essential oils and products. Every interaction with me is tailored to the client’s needs and the development of a long term relationship. I have developed personalized solutions for things like head tension, muscle discomfort and even simple comforting aromas for their home. My person involvement makes me different from others. Nothing I do is standard. Every interaction is personalized and I am always available to answer questions or brainstorm together. I am most proud of knowing that I empower others to manage their concerns by educating them on natural solutions. I really want others/clients to know how much I truly care for their well-being and genuinely enjoy developing relationships with my clients. I learn so much from clients just as they learn from me and my personal experiences with the products.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My family and I recently relocated to another state. It was literally a cross-country move and was very stressful and overwhelming at times. New home, new location, reestablishing state/federal benefits for my autistic son, getting my youngest off to college (back on the other coast), took a tole on me and my health. I really had to give myself a personal reset and do better in caring for me before I could care for others. During this reset, I took the opportunity to re-evaluate my business goals. While my previous client base still existed and we were still in contact regularly, I really wanted to stop and evaluate the new market I moved in to and if that would mean doing things differently. I think everything happens for a reason and having to STOP and just rest for a bit was what I needed. That is my definition of resilience; giving myself permission to rest and reset and change the course if need be. Because I took the time out to refresh, it has opened me up to possibilities and options that I did not see before.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
My business is near and dear to my heart and I knew that from day one I was going to be my own client before I ever shared with others. I spent the time to gain my own experiences using doTERRA essential oils and products. Because of that, my clients know that I am genuine and I am sharing my own real-life experience with them. On that same token, I encourage my clients to share their experiences with me as well. It is such a great way to partner with my clients. It is personal and it should feel that way.
