We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jay Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jay , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
As a business owner, I’ve definitely pondered the idea of what it would be like to have a regular job from time to time. The last time this thought crossed my mind was during a particularly hectic period in my business. I was juggling multiple responsibilities, from client meetings to marketing efforts and content development, all while trying to maintain a strong social media presence. It felt like there were never enough hours in the day to accomplish everything I needed to do.
During this moment of reflection, I found myself longing for the simplicity and stability of working for someone else’s firm. The idea of being able to focus solely on my skills without the added pressure of building a client base or managing all aspects of a business seemed appealing. I imagined having a predictable income stream, clear job responsibilities, and the peace of mind that comes with not having to worry about the day-to-day operations of running a business…and did I mention a steady paycheck :)
However, as I delved deeper into these thoughts, I realized that being a business owner also comes with its own set of rewards. While the challenges can be overwhelming at times, there’s a sense of fulfillment that comes from building something of your own and seeing it thrive. The freedom to pursue my passion, make my own decisions, and chart my own course is something I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that while there are certainly benefits to working for someone else’s firm, I am happier as an individual contributor because of the sense of purpose and autonomy it brings. Despite the occasional moments of doubt or longing for a simpler life, I am grateful for the journey and the opportunity to pursue my dreams on my own terms.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Absolutely! Given that over 90% of our business comes from referrals and repeat clients, it underscores the importance of building trust. It’s crucial to establish trust in our intent, integrity, capabilities, and results to the extent that our clients can’t wait to share their positive experiences with their peers. This trust forms the foundation of our relationships and is key to sustaining and growing our client base.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Several resources have significantly influenced my management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy. Three standout books that have made a profound impact on me are:
1. “Speed of Trust” by Stephen Covey Jr. – This book brilliantly illustrates how trust is the essential ingredient in all relationships, both personal and professional. Covey’s insights have reshaped my understanding of trust and its crucial role in leadership and business success.
2. “Quiet Leadership” by David Rock – Rock’s approach to leadership emphasizes the power of coaching conversations and the impact they can have on individual and team performance. His insights have transformed the way I approach coaching and developing others as a leader.
3. “Emotional Intelligence 2.0” by Travis Bradbury and Jean Greaves – This book provides practical strategies for enhancing emotional intelligence, a critical skill for effective leadership and interpersonal relationships. Bradbury and Greaves’ work has helped me better understand and manage my emotions and those of others in various business contexts.
These resources have not only expanded my knowledge but have also shaped my approach to leadership, management, and entrepreneurship in profound ways.
