We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sydney Golden a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sydney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
A breakup in 2018, partially related to my lack of energy, depression, anxiety and frequent debilitating stomach aches, sparked a fire in me to finally figure out what was going on with my body, get to the root causes and start living the life I knew I was meant to live! In just three short years, lifestyle changes and the help of a functional medicine doctor, I have done more for my health than any conventional doctor ever did in 20 years. Wondering why no doctor talked to me about any of these solutions I was so sad, sad that I “wasted” so many years feeling like shit! So to put all this experience to good use, I want to share my experience so you don’t have to go through what I did!
Sydney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Now looking back, my health journey started when I was very young, but symptoms really started creating havoc in my body around 18, as a freshman in college. For almost 20 years I chased symptoms, naming approximately 30 different symptoms and taking either an OTC or prescription drug or in some cases having surgery. I was depressed, overwhelmed, physically and mentally tired all the time due to all the stress created by my poor health, it was a hamster wheel. Doctors would run labs and say everything looks “normal” and keep treating my symptoms leaving me sicker and more depressed.
Over those 20 years you would have looked at me and seen a “healthy” person. I worked out every day, was an avid runner, what I ate was considered healthy and took care of myself. I rarely talked to even my closest friends about my health issues because doctors told me I was “fine”, no one could figure out what was “wrong” with me, so I kept it all in, almost convincing myself I was crazy and I could just shake it off, asking myself “Am I making this all up? Is it really that bad?”
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My real life experience! I’ve lived it! When you think about hiring someone, do you want someone who has real life experience or someone who simply has a degree? Personally I want to hire someone with real life, lived experience and that’s me! When I chat with people, I personally can empathize with them, in 23 years I’ve experienced most everything and if not personally something very similar and people want to work with an expert like that. Not just someone who has read about it in a text book.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Be authentic. Don’t try to be someone you aren’t, just be you, share your personal experience and offer your services through your lens.
