We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jiayuan Wang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jiayuan below.
Jiayuan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, I believe it’s crucial to embrace continuous learning and adaptability. The design field, especially at the intersection of technology and user experience, is constantly evolving. Staying curious, exploring new tools and methodologies, and being willing to experiment are all vital.
One personal anecdote that illustrates this point occurred during my early years as a design consultant. I was tasked with redesigning the user interface for a cloud-based restaurant management software. Initially, my designs were too focused on aesthetics without considering the practical daily usage by restaurant staff. After receiving feedback, I spent several days shadowing the staff, understanding their workflow and the practical challenges they faced. This experience taught me the importance of empathy and designing with the user’s needs at the forefront, which led to a more intuitive and effective design.
This hands-on approach not only helped me develop a successful product but also shaped my approach to design as a user-centric and iterative process. It underscored the importance of grounding innovation in real-world usability, a principle I’ve carried forward in all my projects and roles, including my current position as a design director at Vision Studio.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Jiayuan Wang, a designer specializing in digital media and product design, currently based in Seattle. My journey into the world of design began with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Boston Architectural College, which laid the foundational skills in design thinking and problem-solving. My passion for blending functionality with aesthetics led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Design from the University of Pennsylvania. This advanced study helped me dive deeper into digital design, particularly in the realms of user experience and interactive media.
Currently, I serve as the Design Director at Vision Studio, where we specialize in creating innovative digital interfaces and immersive experiences. What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes, there is a specific goal that drives my creative journey: to blend technological innovation with human-centric design to create transformative experiences. My mission is to make technology accessible and enjoyable for all users by focusing on intuitive design and user-friendly interfaces. This approach stems from my belief that good design not only solves problems but also enhances everyday life, making technology a tool for empowerment rather than a barrier.
Throughout my career, I’ve been particularly passionate about leveraging design for social impact. This has involved creating digital solutions that address real-world challenges, such as improving healthcare communication tools at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or enhancing educational resources through projects with the University of Washington. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to design that is not only functional and beautiful but also meaningful and impactful.
In addition to solving practical problems, I aim to inspire and educate the next generation of designers by advocating for sustainable design practices and encouraging a deeper understanding of the user’s experience. My work, whether it’s leading projects at Vision Studio or serving as a judge for design awards, is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what design can achieve in both the commercial and cultural spheres.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Certainly, a story that highlights my resilience revolves around a challenging period early in my career when I transitioned from architecture to digital design. After completing my Master’s degree in Design at the University of Pennsylvania, I ventured into the competitive field of digital media design. This shift required not only new technical skills but also a different way of thinking about design problems.
One of the first major challenges I faced was leading a project for a cloud-based restaurant management software. The initial design phase did not go as planned; feedback from early testing sessions indicated that the user interface was visually appealing but not as intuitive or efficient as needed for the fast-paced restaurant environment. The criticism was tough to hear, and the project was at risk of failing to meet the client’s expectations.
Instead of letting this setback discourage me, I used it as a learning opportunity. I immersed myself in the user environment, spending days in various restaurants observing the daily operations and directly engaging with the staff to understand their needs and frustrations. This hands-on experience was invaluable. It allowed me to redesign the software with a focus on user experience, transforming it into a tool that genuinely supported the staff’s workflow.
The project ultimately turned out to be a great success, significantly improving the efficiency of operations for our clients. It was a turning point for me, reinforcing the importance of resilience and adaptability. This experience taught me that effective design is not just about aesthetics but about understanding and solving real user problems. It also underscored the value of direct user engagement, a principle that I have prioritized in all my subsequent projects. This resilience in the face of challenges has been a key factor in my success and continued growth as a designer.
