Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Madeleine Eno. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Madeleine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I help people write their books. One of the industry standards is using a formula to write a book quickly. Instead of doing this, we slow down before the writing begins in order to find the structure, voice and thread of the book that is truly the author’s. When we work together, authors experience a transformation. This is nothing you can predict or create a formula for. And it matters because when you first find the soul of your book and then set out to write it, you provide a much more memorable and transformative experience for the reader. And isn’t that what every author wants?
Madeleine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Madeleine Eno, a book coach and editor who works with authors who have a burning story to tell, a legacy to leave with their book. They want to write books that feel and sound like they do, not like an AI robot. I’ve had decades of experience as a magazine editor and writer, and blend that with intuitive coaching and practical strategy, Today I help authors understand what they’re truly here to say and help them map their books so that the writing process becomes much simpler and their path to publication is clear.
I offer Book Mapping with Soul sessions to help authors get super-clear about their books and make writing their book a whole lot easier. In four weeks, the would-be author moves from agitated and confused to clear, prepared and ready to write their book. We use the tools of Human Design and Gene Keys to uncover keys to the book’s theme and the reader’s journey.
I also offer Book Completion coaching in which I work with authors for six months to a year as they write their book. In this container, they learn to set boundaries around their creativity, face and conquer fear and resistance, clear limiting beliefs, and fine-tune their authentic voice. My goal is to help authors create beautiful, compelling, and memorable books that they are proud of.
I’m incredibly proud of each book we bring across the finish line. Every one of us has our own medicine to share with the world, and it’s an honor to help when that medicine is shared in the form of a book.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal that drives my creativity is that so many people have been carrying around their creative idea for so long. Years. Decades. It is agitating and painful to keep carrying it. I want to do what I can to help them bring their idea from the metaphysical to the physical.
I really believe we live in a universe that could not be so cruel as to give us an idea that is not ours to explore.
The things that are in the way are things we can work with–resistance, fear, limiting beliefs.. I believe my creative journey’s mission is to initiate others on THEIR creative journeys.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I’m one of those people who’s had dozens of jobs over the years: waiter, typesetter, yoga teacher, art instructor, ESL teacher, fundraiser, magazine editor, bartender—often doing a few of those at the same time.
But no matter what I was doing, I always found myself writing: scribbling business plans for customers on napkins and jotting down taglines between wiping tables or driving to school or making cold calls. Circling like a nervous hawk around what I loved (writing), but never quite landing.
Then I started getting jobs that got me closer.
MILESTONE: I was hired as a designer at an outdoor magazine in Boston–and the publisher told me she believed I was better suited for writing. I got to hang out with an amazing group of writers and editors and we traveled, won some awards, and had a lot of fun producing a publication that meant something. My favorite part was writing feature stories about people and hearing them say things like, “I can’t believe you made sense of that garble that came out of my mouth.” I loved creating clarity out of ideas that felt jumbled.
But something was still missing. And so off I went searching for the right path in all the wrong places. I hitched my wagon to way too many other people’s stars, and found myself selling everything I owned and moving out West.
About 12 years ago I hung out my shingle as a writer and committed to doing my side-hustle full time. I took ANY kind of work–from writing copy for a catalog about falconry equipment to coming up with taglines for a circus and writing the sales books for a mergers and acquisitions company.
MILESTONE: I discovered the world of online coaching, went to a big conference in LA, and started to work as a copywriter in that world.
MILESTONE: When a copywriting client asked if I would help her write her book, I said, “No, I don’t think I can do that.” She pushed: “I think you would be really good at it.” So I worked with her and we got her book done, It was a huge success for her and it changed the trajectory of my business.
Today, I work mostly with solopreneurs, coaches, healers, and business owners who generally have a few things going on: They’ve been in business for a while, are very good at what they do, and know there is a book they are meant to write.
