We were lucky to catch up with Emma Thompson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
I am a huge advocate for family businesses. Yes, sometimes the relationships go south but on the other hand you are able to create a system that isn’t necessarily “protocol” but it works for you and is allowed since you’re all family. It also creates some of the best memories and makes you more understanding and appreciative of one another. Augusta Creek is a family business and I feel like that’s one of the more special things about it. I love that I’ve been able to go through this journey, good times and bad, but still feel like no matter what happens we have these great memories and a beautiful building to show for it.
Emma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been fascinated by the wedding industry. It’s just such a happy time and I love making a vision come to life. My dad is just so good at what he does, he can take anything and make it into something shiny and new. It’s like his superpower. I feel like we are different than other places because everything we use in the building is real material. All the woodwork, stone, counters, all of it. Real natural material, and that’s what makes the whole place so beautiful I feel. I’m most proud of how far we have come even when it felt like the end. In construction there are always bumps in the roads and delays, but some of the bumps we had to get over really felt like mountains at the time. It’s easy to feel defeated but my dad doesn’t have a give up bone in his body, and I think at the end of the day the credit of success is due to him putting in the constant hours all alone when no one was watching.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My “business partner” is actually my dad. I put that in quotes because at the end of the day we both know he’s the boss. It’s really special to work with your dad, because normally they’re always in charge and your parent. But then when you work with them you’re allowed to go against the grain and come up with a solution that might not be what they had in mind. It just starts a new form of respect and value for each other’s opinions.
How did you build your audience on social media?
We built our audience mainly on Facebook and instagram. I started up the pages and just kind of kept up on all of our construction progress. Some people have been there from the very beginning watching and it’s really unique that they got to be in on the ride the whole time. We eventually reached out and had our branding and websites done when we started booking events. My biggest piece of advice to people starting to build media presence is to take all the meeting you can with ad companies and social media directors, you’ll learn so much that you’ll be able to do it on your own.
