Joslyn, appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.

My journey into owning my own practice began with a dream of entrepreneurship. Though I knew I wanted to start a business, the specifics eluded me at first. I took my initial steps by majoring in management and marketing during college. Even then, I had a clear vision of my logo and colors, eventually adopting a slogan and establishing business cards with my name and the title of CEO.

It wasn’t until later, during graduate school where I studied counseling, that I discovered my true niche and profession as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. My advice to young professionals is to delve deep into their interests, prioritize quality over competition, and infuse their own personality into their branding. Stay open to absorbing new ideas that can enrich your plan or vision along the way.

I, Joslyn D. Curley, M.A., LPC-Supervisor, am proud to share my journey as a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, spanning an enriching 15-year tenure with a successful decade of private practice. Hailing from Houston, I pursued my education with fervor, earning a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of Houston and a Master’s in Counseling from Prairie View A & M University.

Combining my passion for counseling with an entrepreneurial spirit, I founded Dione Counseling & Associates, PLLC, where I focus on providing support to adolescents and young adults facing various mental health challenges. Beyond the counseling room, I am actively engaged in efforts to dismantle stigmas surrounding mental health, advocating for acceptance and support within my community and beyond.

My expertise lies in assisting clients dealing with anxiety, depression, anger, stress management, and a range of behavioral issues. I also offer crucial support to families confronting domestic violence, grief, substance abuse, and other complex challenges, equipping them with the necessary coping skills to navigate adversity.

As a proud member of esteemed organizations such as the American Counseling Association, Texas Counseling Association, and Texas Mental Health Counselors Association, I remain dedicated to professional growth and collaboration. My involvement in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and various non-profit endeavors reflects my commitment to giving back and fostering positive change.

As a mental health professional, I have encountered my own mental health challenges. In addition, I have navigated through health issues, legal troubles, and more, yet I have continued to strive and maintain my own private practice for over a decade.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

I’ve always prioritized quality over competition. When you invest in the excellence of your niche rather than worrying about what others are doing, it leaves more room for collaboration and networking, ultimately enhancing your brand. Unfortunately, many business owners get caught up in emulating what works for others instead of focusing on delivering top-notch service. It’s the quality of your offerings that truly sets you apart in the eyes of prospective clients or customers and ensures your longevity beyond the initial challenges of starting a business. Simply put, quality keeps you in business and leaves a lasting impression on people.
