Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gregg DaCosta. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Gregg, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I would say my whole career is taking a risk. When it comes to the film industry you’re always taking a gamble because you don’t know whether you created a hit or you missed. The thing is if you don’t make an attempt, you’ll never see if it was positive sign or a negative sign, and no matter what it’s always a positive sign because at the end of the day you made that attempt and you were able to learn from the results. Every film I’ve made I took a risk investing in myself, but one thing about me is I’m always going to bet on me with anything I do because I know everything I attempt I give my all in it. Once I did that I was able to achieve all the success, from getting films into film festivals to winning them, and to having them on television and streamed on platforms.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started from when I was a teenager writing scripts. I did my research by using Google and searching screenplays that I liked that were on television and followed the formula. The recipe to success for me that worked was always follow the instructions to something that’s already made, then experiment and add your own sauce to it to make it original. I’m proud that I was able to learn things at an early age, but continue that same grinding mentality at an older age where I can apply it to everything. One of my films Guilty Conscience that’s on TUBI, was created from when I was younger then as I got older I took that same idea and created a whole feature film, and again I invested in myself because I know my worth. If you know that everyone else will see it too.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The particular goal that drives my creative journey is creating my very first script, which is a sci fi series. I feel like all of the scripts are all stepping stones to it. And once I get there I feel like one of the major goals in my life is completed, but until then the marathon is only getting started.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
How I put together the initial capital was my regular 9-5 at the time. Some people are lucky when they have others that can back them up, maybe someone in the family has money or maybe they go about getting it from grants, my way was saving up every coin and getting the things I wanted. This why it’s important to invest in yourself. When I’ve worked with other creatives, I’ve seen some of the equipment’s they used and I said I have to get that one day so I did just that.
