We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christina Exantus a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I do free lance makeup and have my own booking site. However, I am not a full time makeup artist I also work in a law firm, aspiring to become a paralegal. I think I can be more consistent when it comes to my craft overall with makeup, I think I could have done better had I had a team. But I’ve come far I started with cosmetics and then begin taking clients.

Christina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Christina I’m 29, born and raised in Queensbridge NY. I have been into makeup since young, however I had a more liking to selling makeup products at first and that’s how I founded lipsressential. Later on I started to hang around makeup artists and got more confident. One thing that pushed me to start taking clients was being wrongfully terminated from honey cosmetics. That’s when I knew I could only do makeup on my terms and so I worked hard and although I’m not where I wish to be I’m not where I was yesterday.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
To not do what I do for
The money! Money will
Come eventually but when you truly love what you’re doing it’s the joy in that which is important. When I first started doing makeup I was so money driven, now I’m all about really making people feel their best selves. And that alone has changed how I feel about Makeup, in a good way.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being consistent and having great customer service. Give every client an experience they remember.
