We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenny Xiao. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenny below.
Alright, Jenny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most recent collection has very special meanings to me. The muse of this collection is my father. My father is a business man and a golfer. I used fashion as a medium to express her relation with family, sports, and self. From my childhood, I have always perceived golf through my own unique and abstract perspective. This is evident in my use of purple, selection of natural wool and sports jerseys, and the playful experimentation with forms, tailoring and 3d printing techniques. In the world of Birdie, standard polo shirts transform into playful printed polo dresses with open backs, and piping ceases to be a mere detail for golf bags, integrating into garment design. My transformative approach brings structure to chaos by reshaping the traditional image of golf and repurposing it for fresh and innovative expressions.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My design philosophy is all about bringing order to chaos. I always aim to explore the ordinary and mundane subjects in our lives and regroup them into multifunctional and unexpected combinations, hoping to give a fresh and playful perspectives to my audience. I aim to create a space for the audience to pause, breathe, and immerse themselves in my work. Born and raised in China, my inspiration comes from cultural and personal background. It is presented in the consistent use of colors and forms in the collections. Exploration of unconventional materials has become a routine in my creative process. Unlinking their traditional use and reorganizing it to new purposes help me to achieve more thoughtful details for each piece of garment I create.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to create something of my own. This is the most rewarding part of being a fashion designer. Every single garment is built by my hands from the initial ideas, to sketching the ideas, sourcing inspiring materials and the process of making and remaking a single garment. This process is often stressful and intense. However, when the final photoshoot turns out so unexpected and beautiful, that is the moment when everything become worth it. The process itself then also turned into a rewarding memory.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to combine the future and fashion together. I always aim to look for similarities between two different subjects. I want to connect different world together through the medium of fashion. This could create many communities and different type of audiences. I want to bring new collisions and surprises to my audience.
