We recently connected with Namarah McCall-Spellman and have shared our conversation below.
Namarah, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
Your voice, your thoughts and perspective matter.
My first job was non traditional. After finishing school I was a part of a diverse team of creative minds and performers. We traveled the country performing for elders and their caregivers. One year, we decided to revise the show and include fresh influences from community partners. We spent time working with the local community, letting their stories shine through our focus groups. It became the backdrop of our new show and story to tell on the road.
We spent a week together writing in Seattle. With so many creative people in one place, I leaned into saying to myself. Since I was both the youngest and inexperienced members of the team I felt like it wasn’t my place to be a part of the writing. At one moment, the conversation started to go in a direction where I did see a lot of potential and I had the itch in the back of my mind to share. More and more I felt the pressure within to share my own perspective. When it came to the time to share, I was full of emotion almost to the brink of tears after finally speaking up.
I realized then what was most important. Silence to the creative spirit is the ultimate pain. As I coach artists and empower, I always lean back to how relieved I felt to just speak. More often times than not, we train ourselves to quiet the creativity we carry. In doing so, we train ourselves and learn that we don’t deserve to take up space. It’s a lie.

Namarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a multi hyphenate creative aiming to unlock other artists into the freedom of using their own voice. I started Artist Awakening after building my own career in music as an internationally streaming recording artist and performer. I’m most proud of how my own journey has both inspired and empowered other Christian creatives who dreamed of being exactly themselves, authentically and with excellence. As an artist and coach, I have helped these artists launch into their next chapter of creativity where they feel aligned with their purpose, creatively at ease and bolder in their craft.
Some of my clients have begun touring, published books, launched podcasts and began writing their debut musical projects. This education and empowerment has pushed me to represent and continue create pathways for artists and artistry in the Recording Academy, non-profit spaces, as well as within the local and online communities we engage in. I love being able to help artists begin their journey and to even try again after walking away.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Consistency has been the only answer to growth in social media. No matter what showing up has always shown me the best results even on days when I didn’t feel like opening the app.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My saying is that I do and teach. I don’t sell anything I haven’t experienced and accomplished myself first. As a coach it’s important to know the strengths and limits of your offerings. You can only share what you have learned and experienced, not what you have experimented.
