Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mirasha Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mirasha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
The question is what didn’t they do right? Many people may not know but I have three parents: my mom, my dad, and my stepdad. Together, they’ve shown me the power of resilience, determination, and unconditional love. Each of them brings unique strengths into my life, shaping me into the person I am today.
My biological parents laid the foundation of my values and taught me the importance of hard work and empathy. My mother always told me to lean into my faith while staying true to myself, and my father gave me the drive to pursue whatever I want in life with the utmost confidence. They instilled in me a sense of pride and integrity that guides me in everything I do.
My stepdad, however, showed me that family is not defined solely by blood but by the bonds we form and the love we share. He came into my life when I was 11 years old, and one of the most important lessons he’s taught me is the value of keeping your word. We come from completely different paths, but he showed me the beauty in acceptance and understanding different perspectives and experiences.
Through their example, I’ve learned that love knows no bounds. It’s a love that’s unconditional, unwavering, and endlessly supportive. It’s the kind of love that gives me the strength to face life’s challenges with courage and grace. I am truly blessed to have such incredible parents who have shaped me into the person I am today. Their influence has been profound, and I am endlessly grateful for the love, guidance, and support they’ve provided me throughout my life.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been a creative. My parents gave me the autonomy to explore my creativity through the arts, which was absolutely amazing. From a young age, I was drawn to storytelling, captivated by the power of words to inform, inspire, and connect people from all walks of life. My mother was an avid writer and my dad was a sports broadcaster who absolutely loved his job. Communications became not just a career path, but a calling—a way for me to give voice to the voiceless, shine a light on important issues, and foster understanding in an increasingly complex world.
Over the course of a decade, my career in communications and marketing expanded across multiple capacities, and while certain aspects of my work brought fulfillment and purpose, there was a yearning for something more meaningful. Not to mention, these industries are extremely demanding and took a toll on my physical and mental health in various ways.
Life took a huge turn for me on May 10, 2023. Professional pressures and untreated mental health issues led to me having an intense mental breakdown and I almost took my own life. This resulted in me doing a six-day stay at a psychiatric facility—and I can honestly say this was the most traumatic experience of my life.
Through extensive therapy and venting sessions with my support system, I was able to regain control of my life. Those dark days are behind me, but I wanted to take that pain and turn it into something transformative. I wanted to advocate for Black women’s well-being in the workplace, aiming to create environments where individuals feel supported and empowered to prioritize their mental health.
My dear colleague and sister, Deme Jackson, and I founded The Lotus Club (TLC for short)—a community organization that centers on uplifting and empowering Black women in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. TLC is committed to addressing the unique challenges we face in the workplace and providing a safe space for them to heal through targeted programming, community initiatives, and empowering conversations.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was blaming myself for other people’s actions. I often internalized the behavior of those around me, believing that if someone did something wrong or hurtful, it must have been because I did something to cause it. This mindset stemmed from a combination of factors including a desire to please others, a fear of conflict, and a lack of understanding about boundaries.
The backstory behind this lesson originates from my quest for approval from others. Whenever someone behaved poorly towards me, I automatically assumed I had somehow failed to meet their expectations, and that triggered feelings of guilt and inadequacy. It wasn’t until I gained more life experience and exposure to healthier relationships that I began to challenge this belief. Through therapy and self-reflection, I learned about the concept of boundaries and the importance of holding others accountable for their actions. This helped me cultivate healthier relationships and a greater sense of self-respect.
How’d you meet your business partner?
This is a really funny story! I started working as an HR Communications Specialist at the City of Dallas in November 2018. Deme was working in a different department at the time, and her role required her to help other departments with their communications efforts. When she learned someone was hired for the role, she did some investigating to find me and when we connected, we instantly clicked. We’ve been stuck together ever since!
Being in business together is so easy because we’re already familiar with each other’s working styles. And we’re both Virgos so it’s truly a match made in heaven.
