We were lucky to catch up with Candace Orange recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Candace, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned in school and why that lesson is important to you?
Ten years ago, I walked across the stage at Clark Atlanta University, diploma in hand, with the echo of our motto, “Find a Way or Make One,” reverberating in my mind. Little did I know then just how profoundly that mantra would shape my journey in the years to come.
As a Studio Art/Advertising Design major, I was armed with creativity and skill, honed through rigorous training at Moore College of Art and Design in Philly. Yet, despite graduating at the top of my class and possessing what I thought were all the tools necessary to succeed in my chosen field, reality hit hard after graduation.
Job opportunities in my industry were scarce, and doors seemed to close at every turn. Faced with the harsh reality of rejection, I could have easily succumbed to despair. But that’s not the CAU way. Instead, I embraced the spirit of our motto and decided to carve my own path.
With nothing but determination and a willingness to hustle, I ventured into the world of freelancing. It was a leap of faith into the unknown, but I was driven by a passion to make my mark and prove that I was capable of turning my dreams into reality.
In those early days, social media was still in its infancy, and platforms like Instagram were just beginning to gain traction. Sensing an opportunity to leverage my skills in the burgeoning digital landscape, I pitched myself to business owners eager to establish their presence online.
The journey wasn’t easy. There were moments of doubt, setbacks, and sleepless nights. But with each challenge, I leaned into the lessons learned at CAU – the importance of resilience, resourcefulness, and relentless determination.
Ten years on, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve undertaken. Through sheer perseverance and a refusal to accept defeat, I’ve built a successful creative agency, working with a diverse array of clients that span industries and backgrounds.
From collaborating with influential activists like Tamika D. Mallory to partnering with esteemed institutions like Southern University Law and the Massachusetts Black Lawyer Association, every project has been a testament to the power of tenacity and self-belief.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. Every twist and turn, every triumph and tribulation, has shaped me into the person I am today. And as I continue to navigate the unpredictable currents of life, I carry with me the enduring wisdom of my alma mater – the unwavering belief that if you can’t find a way, you make one.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an artist with a relentless entrepreneurial spirit. My journey into the creative world began in elementary school, where I found my passion for art and won numerous awards for my work. Those early experiences laid the foundation for my future in the industry, shaping me into the creative powerhouse I am today.
As the founder of The CEO Connect Agency, an Atlanta-based design agency, I’ve dedicated myself to upscale beauty branding and private labeling/product development. With a passion for beauty, I specialize in crafting captivating visual identities and product experiences that resonate with discerning consumers. My expertise lies in elevating brands through visually stunning design, meticulously honed messaging, and strategic product development.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of clients, including Black Ink Crew Chicago, Southern University Law, Hype Hair Magazine, Vh1, and the Massachusetts Black Lawyer Association, among others. Each project has been an opportunity for me to showcase my creativity and expertise, and I’m incredibly grateful for the trust my clients have placed in me.
In addition to my work at The CEO Connect Agency, I also helm LittyConnect LED Signage, where I’ve had the privilege of working with esteemed clients such as CRU Lounge, Slutty Vegan, and Mariah Huq of Married to Medicine.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation. I’ve always believed that there’s nothing I can’t create, and I bring that same determination to every project I undertake. Whether it’s crafting a logo, designing marketing materials, or conceptualizing a brand identity, I pour my heart and soul into every aspect of my work.
But perhaps what I’m most proud of is my upcoming project – a creative mentorship platform set to launch in Fall 2024. This initiative is a return to my artist roots and a testament to my passion for helping others succeed. Through this platform, I’ll be providing resources for creatives of color, including mentorship and wealth management guidance. I’ll also be curating events aimed at uplifting and empowering creatives, fostering collaboration, and preventing burnout.
Ultimately, my goal is to use my experiences, skills, and resources to help fellow creatives realize their full potential. Whether you’re a client seeking top-notch design services or a budding artist looking for guidance and support, I’m here to help you bring your dreams to life.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
My journey into graphic design and entrepreneurship began as a side hustle during my college years, driven by a desire to explore my creativity and make a difference. At the time, Instagram was just starting to gain popularity, and I found myself using a simple app on my phone to create flyers for my businesses.
Realizing that there might be a demand for this service beyond my own needs, I decided to reach out to local businesses listed in the phone book. I pitched them the idea of branding services and helping them establish a presence on Instagram. It was a bold move considering that Instagram was primarily seen as a platform for sharing photos rather than for business promotion.
Despite the initial challenges, I started to gain traction with clients who were eager to embrace this new marketing opportunity. I started by charging modest fees for my services, such as $10 to $20 for a flyer design. As my skills improved and I transitioned to using Photoshop for more sophisticated designs, I gradually increased my prices.
One of the key milestones in my journey was when I started to focus more on branding and creative consulting. I realized that by offering comprehensive solutions, such as creating logos to accompany the flyers, I could provide greater value to my clients and differentiate myself in the market.
Another important milestone was when I rebranded myself as The CEO Connect, reflecting my belief in the power of connections and networking. I focused on building relationships with individuals and businesses that I admired, which led to collaborations and opportunities that helped me grow my business.
Today, The CEO Connect Agency is a full-service design agency specializing in upscale branding and product development. While I no longer focus on flyer design as much, I still offer it as a service for $125, reflecting the evolution of my business and the changing needs of my clients.
Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and the willingness to take risks. And while the path may not have been what I initially envisioned, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish a tool like ChatGPT had existed earlier in my creative journey. Its capabilities would have been incredibly helpful in streamlining my processes and enhancing my productivity. As a detail-oriented entrepreneur, having access to ChatGPT’s ability to generate creative messaging efficiently would have been a game-changer. It’s like discovering the best thing since sliced bread – and believe me, I’ve never understood the hype over sliced bread until now! So, to all my fellow entrepreneurs and creatives out there, trust me when I say, ChatGPT is the secret sauce you never knew you needed until you try it!
