We recently connected with Brooke Cagle and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brooke thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I have worked on thus far has been writing and recording my debut album “Maps”. The writing process took place over a couple of years. A lot of my inspiration came from getting out of my comfort zone and traveling, as well as working through some mental health struggles. I got to work with an amazing audio engineer and musician who I also co-wrote several songs with while recording the album, as well as several other outstanding musicians and vocalists. I have loved getting to share my thoughts and feelings with people and hope to build more and more connections through this project. I am very proud of the time and work that I put into it, as it had been a dream of mine since I was a kid to release original music.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From a young age music has been a part of my life. My sister is an amazing musician and she taught me to sing harmony alongside her when I was about 6 or 7 years old. But between then and when I started playing the drums when I was 12 years old, music was more of an afterthought. Playing the drums changed that completely. I was a very shy kid growing up but drumming really brought me out of my shell and helped me build friendships with others. Looking back, it was also very therapeutic!
Playing music brought out a new and different sense of joyful fulfillment than I had ever known. As time went on, I began to learn guitar as well, when I was about 16. I started playing with the hope that I could start to write original music. While it took years to ever write songs that I liked enough to share with others, I have learned a lot about myself and also worked through a lot of hard situations through songwriting. I believe that there is something so beautiful about making art from pain.
At this point in my life, I am most proud of the music I have written, both what has been released and what only exists in my voice memos and notes folders on my phone. The more I write and play, the more I feel I develop my own original sound.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is always to write music that listeners can relate to, from the lighthearted to the more serious moments. Writing has helped and does help me work through hard times in life and I would love for it to be a source of light, clarity, or understanding for others as well. All of the time and effort put in is so worth it to me if I have even one person tell me that my music has helped them feel seen, heard, or understood.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think that the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the feeling that transpires when a song really comes together. Creating art invokes a type of joy that I have never experienced in any other way. I believe it is probably similar to other experiences that boost adrenaline – almost like a runner’s high, but it’s a writer’s high. The act of creating is a reward in itself and I find myself constantly chasing it.
