Alright, Richard thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Hello, my name is Richard Campas. I embarked on my journey into the world of barbering at a young age, attending Hollywood Barber College when I was just 15 years old. Determined and driven, I obtained my barber license at the remarkable age of 16, followed by my instructor license at 18. I owe much of my knowledge and skill to my father, Ray Campas a Master barber with over 65 years of experience. However, my path took a dark turn when I was 22, leading me into the grips of addiction to meth, heroin, and alcohol. I lost everything I had worked tirelessly for and found myself teetering on the brink of death. But through sheer resilience and determination, I embarked on a new journey—one of recovery. Today, I have just over six years sober and have reclaimed my passion for barbering and build a brighter future. Showing others who have gone through a similar journey that there is hope.

Richard, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Richard Campas, and my journey into the world of barbering began at a remarkably young age. Inspired by my father, Ray Campas, a second-place United States champion barber known for his artistry with a straight razor, I stepped into the realm of barbering at the tender age of 15. By 16, I was licensed, and by 18, I had earned my instructor license.
Growing up, I faced challenges typical for someone born into a family grappling with addiction. My biological mother’s struggle with substance abuse cast a shadow over my early years, but I was fortunate to be adopted by my grandparents, who provided stability and love. Despite the adversity, I found success through hard work and dedication.
However, at 22, I found myself ensnared in the grips of addiction. My descent into darkness led me down a treacherous path of heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and alcohol. I lost everything, nearly losing my life in the process. But in the depths of despair, I found the courage to seek help and embark on the journey to recovery.
Recovery wasn’t just about overcoming addiction; it was about rediscovering my purpose and honoring my father’s legacy. Tragically, during my first year of sobriety, I lost my entire family, leaving me to carry on my father’s mantle as a beacon of inspiration in the barbering world.
Today, I stand as a testament to the power of resilience and redemption. My experiences have shaped me into more than just a skilled barber; I am a symbol of hope for those facing similar struggles. Through my craft, I strive not only to sculpt hair but also to uplift spirits and instill confidence.
What sets me apart is not just my technical expertise but also my journey of transformation. I understand firsthand the challenges my clients may be facing, and I approach my work with empathy and compassion. Every haircut is an opportunity to connect, inspire, and empower others to embrace their own path to recovery and fulfillment.
I am most proud of the journey I’ve undertaken—from the depths of addiction to the heights of sobriety and success. My story is a testament to the human capacity for resilience and reinvention. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my journey and to serve as a guiding light for others in the barbering and beauty industry.
For potential clients or students, I want them to know that my work is more than just cutting hair or teaching—it’s a testament to the power of transformation and the resilience of the human spirit. Whether you’re looking for a fresh new style or seeking inspiration on your own journey, I am here to support and uplift you every step of the way.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most profound lessons I had to unlearn on my journey to recovery was the habit of being judgmental. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of addiction within my family, and I carried with me a sense of judgment towards those who struggled with similar challenges. However, as I battled my own demons and found myself entrenched in the same cycle of addiction, I came to realize the harsh truth—I had become the very people I once judged.
This realization was a humbling moment for me. It forced me to confront my own biases and recognize the complexities of addiction and recovery. I learned that addiction knows no boundaries—it can affect anyone, regardless of background or upbringing. By judging others, I was only perpetuating stigma and isolation, further hindering my own path to healing.
Through therapy, support groups, and self-reflection, I embarked on the journey to unlearn this harmful mindset. I learned to replace judgment with empathy and compassion, understanding that everyone’s journey is unique and deserving of respect. I embraced the importance of offering support and understanding rather than condemnation.
This lesson taught me the invaluable power of humility and empathy. It reminded me that we are all flawed and struggling in our own ways, and that true healing begins with acceptance and understanding. Today, I strive to approach every interaction with an open heart and a non-judgmental attitude, recognizing that we are all deserving of compassion and support on our journey towards recovery and personal growth. Am I perfect? No not by any sense of the word, however I am an entirely different person than I used to be.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Certainly. There was a pivotal moment in my journey where I realized that I needed to pivot not only in my personal life but also in my approach to business. For a long time, I had been doing things the wrong way—the easy way—often driven by short-term gains and misguided motivations. This pattern not only led me down a destructive path of addiction but also threatened to undermine my success in the barbering industry, which was built on integrity, skill, and hard work.
The turning point came when I hit rock bottom, facing the consequences of my actions and grappling with the stark reality of my situation. It was a sobering realization that the shortcuts and compromises I had made were not sustainable and were ultimately detrimental to my well-being and success.
With the support of loved ones and mentors, I made the decision to pivot—to chart a new course guided by principles of authenticity, honesty, and perseverance. This meant letting go of old habits and embracing a new mindset—one rooted in integrity and a commitment to doing things the right way, even if it meant taking the harder path.
In my barbering business, this pivot was reflected in my approach to people, relationships, and the quality of service, and overall professionalism. I shifted my focus from chasing quick profits to building meaningful connections with people delivering exceptional work, and upholding the legacy of craftsmanship passed down by my father.
This shift in mindset not only transformed my personal life but also revitalized my business, earning me the trust and loyalty of clients and colleagues alike. It was a lesson in resilience and redemption, proving that true success lies not in cutting corners but in staying true to oneself and one’s values, even in the face of adversity.
Today, I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and inspire others to pivot towards a path of authenticity and integrity, both in business and in life. It’s a journey that continues to unfold, reminding me that growth and transformation are possible when we are willing to confront our shortcomings and embrace change with courage and conviction.
