We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zhiheng Gong a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Zhiheng, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
As a creative worker, I believe this is a very meaningful thing, because I express my understanding and thoughts about the world through my work, and influence others in this way. In the process of creation, I often enter a state of flow and often feel that time passes without notice, which is the happiest experience for me. I have also tried fixed designer jobs, where I need to work overtime frequently to deal with some emergencies. The most fatal thing is that it’s hard for me to have my own opinion in a design team, which often leads to me doing designs or proposals that I don’t like. This is a kind of torture for me, so later I chose to create my own work.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a sculptor and 3D artist from China. I specialize in creating art pieces with asymmetric structures, drawing inspiration from different perspectives on life’s details. I feel that the world we inhabit is too dull, filled with serious geometric shapes. At the same time, I incorporate traditional Chinese lacquer techniques into my work, blending Eastern and Western cultures to create a fascinating fusion. My dream is to create a magical space in this world, different from the mainstream, a utopia that belongs solely to myself and those who appreciate my work.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
In the early stages, I hoped to understand how the entire gallery operated, gather various information about art fairs, and learn about local official art festivals. This greatly helped me understand how artists can thrive better in the art world.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most valuable aspect of artistic creation is when the creator exists as themselves rather than as an object and strives to contemplate. This is actually quite rare. While there may be some literature courses in school that encourage students to ponder philosophical or existential questions, children at that age are too young, and these issues aren’t attractive to them. One cannot have an understanding of youth while still being youthful. After graduation, society as a whole demands that you work, earn money, get married, buy a house, striving to enter the next stage of life. At this point, few people can persist in their own contemplation; the herd mentality makes us feel comfortable. However, as an artistic creator, reflecting on everything that life presents is an essential part of creation. In fact, it’s the greatest fortune.
