We were lucky to catch up with Andres Lopez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Andres thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I think one of the keys is to expand your work options. In addition to being a studio painter, I also participate in events, paint murals, and teach art classes.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a professional in the fine arts, I have had to come a long way and although more than 30 years have passed, every day I think that I am just beginning. The world of the arts marks you for life, every year you grow as a professional, you reach new goals but there are others that await you. I have received countless compliments from art collectors, friends, and artists who tell me that they like my sensitivity to see art in the most common things. I also teach drawing and painting from my own studio in the city of Miami where I put my greatest effort into establishing solid foundations in my students that will serve them forever on this fascinating path.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am sure that there are other jobs that are much better paid financially, however, I have never felt that I have missed something good in the life of being an artist, being an artist is not a matter of choice, art chooses you, it is your identity and the Doing it makes you feel fulfilled. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Success as an artist takes years of preparation, of trying this and that, of maturing, of falling and getting back up. I remember as a young man standing in a food store selling paintings for $20. It’s all about fighting to achieve your dreams.
