We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Harlee Balajadia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Harlee below.
Hi Harlee, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Absolutely, I’ve been fortunate to make a full-time living from my creative pursuits, which has been a deeply fulfilling journey. It’s not just about financial stability for me, but also about the rich tapestry of experiences and connections that creativity brings into my life and the lives of those around me.
My path to earning a living from my creative work hasn’t been linear. It began with a lot of hustle and determination. In the early days, I was focused on making myself seen and heard in a crowded field. I hustled to showcase my talents and prove my worth to potential employers or clients. It was about accumulating skills, experience, and building a resume that would catch the eye of those in my industry.
Over time, however, my perspective shifted. I realized that my value as a creative wasn’t solely based on meeting certain criteria, but rather on the unique perspective and contributions I could offer. This transition from proving my worth to embracing my individuality was pivotal in my journey.
Major milestones along the way included recognizing and celebrating my uniqueness as a strength rather than a hindrance. This shift in mindset empowered me to take risks, explore new opportunities, and push the boundaries of my creativity. Another crucial realization was the importance of commitment and perseverance. Every project, every gig, was a step towards my goal, and I learned to value each experience as an opportunity for growth.
While there were challenges and setbacks along the way, I wouldn’t change a thing. Each moment, whether triumphant or difficult, has been essential to my growth as a creative professional. Looking back, I realize that my journey couldn’t have been rushed or accelerated. Every step, every encounter, has played a role in shaping me into the artist and individual I am today.
In hindsight, I don’t believe I could have sped up the process. Each experience has been a lesson in its own right, and the journey of becoming a full-time creative is as much about the process as it is about the destination. It’s about embracing the unknown, cherishing the connections made along the way, and finding fulfillment in the pursuit of one’s passions.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When you ask a creative about their work, it’s always a bit of a loaded question because the nature of what we do tends to encompass a multitude of roles and responsibilities. However, if I were to distill it down, I primarily identify as a Tenor Vocalist, Music Educator, and Arts Administrator.
As a professional musician, my journey into the world of music has been deeply rooted in my upbringing and cultural heritage as a first-generation Filipino-American. From a young age, I was surrounded by supportive family members who encouraged me to explore my passion for singing. This support paved the way for me to participate in community choirs, pursue choir in high school, and eventually make the decision to devote my life to music in college, a decision that has led me to where I am today.
In my capacity as a tenor vocalist, I have had the privilege of lending my voice to a variety of professional settings. Whether it’s performing with professional choirs, taking on individual singing gigs, fulfilling church roles, or touring nationally with an acapella group, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with talented individuals who appreciate and trust my ability to represent my cultural roots authentically through music.
Transitioning to my role as a music educator, I’ve found immense fulfillment in shaping the lives of students and empowering them to pursue their own musical dreams. For me, teaching music isn’t just about imparting technical skills; it’s about nurturing self-awareness and personal growth through the medium of music. One of my mentors once said, “I don’t just teach music. I teach people – through music.” This motto resonates deeply with me, as it reflects my belief in using music as a platform to mentor and inspire the next generation.
Lastly, as an arts administrator, I’ve had the opportunity to take on a different kind of leadership role. Managing both students and adults, I strive to foster a sense of unity and collaboration, empowering individuals to harness their talents and contribute to a shared vision. Through delegation and empowerment, I aim to expand our outreach and impact, recognizing the potential for music to serve as a powerful tool for connection and expression in today’s world.
What I’m most proud of in my journey is the authentic connections I’ve forged along the way. Whether it’s through singing, teaching, or administrative work, I’ve been blessed to attract individuals who appreciate my genuine approach and commitment to uplifting others. Together, we’ve created a supportive community where we can all cultivate our unique talents and make a positive impact on the world around us.
Ultimately, I hope potential clients, followers, and fans recognize that my work is driven by a passion for authenticity, creativity, and empowerment. Whether it’s through music performance, education, or administration, my goal is to leave a lasting legacy of genuine connection and meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The profound mission that drives my creative journey—a mission rooted in authenticity, gratitude, and the transformative power of music.
At the core of my journey is the desire to be a beacon, a source of inspiration that attracts others to embrace the beauty and potential of living authentically. I believe that true fulfillment lies in daring to explore the depths of our creativity and embracing the endless possibilities it offers. It’s about living life with a hunger for authenticity, knowing that the most meaningful experiences are found in the present moment.
Gratitude is another guiding principle that shapes my creative path. I am acutely aware that my journey is not solitary, but rather a product of the trust, warmth, love, and investment of countless individuals who have supported and believed in me along the way. It’s a recognition of the interconnectedness of all our lives and the profound impact that each person can have on the journey of another.
Moreover, I firmly believe that every life needs a creative outlet, a means of self-expression and connection with the world around us. For me, music serves as that universal language—a powerful force that transcends boundaries and resonates with the deepest parts of our being. Whether it’s through performance, education, or administration, I strive to share the gift of music and its capacity to enrich and uplift lives.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative, for me, is the knowledge that the work we create and the experiences we craft have the potential to leave a lasting legacy that transcends time and space. As artists, we have the unique ability to touch the lives of untold generations, leaving an indelible mark on the world long after we’re gone. It’s a privilege and a responsibility that I hold dear, and one that inspires me to continue creating, innovating, and sharing my passion with others.
