We recently connected with Willie Hamilton Jr and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Willie , thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

I lost my grandmother in 2020, she was a huge factor in my life and raised me from the age of 5 years old.

I knew I wanted to create a line of beauty products but I struggled with names at first. It then dawned on me that “Velma Jean” would be an awesome, wholesome name for a beauty line So I took my grandma’s first and middle name.

This was exciting to me for the fact I’m able to keep my grandmother’s name alive and introduce a brand that embraces natural beauty from the inside out.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I have been a makeup artist going on 8 years now. I started off with selling cosmetics and then ventured off into creating customized cosmetics from scratch, which set me apart from other makeup artists. I was able to match any skin tone perfectly all the while testing each ingredient that went into the their final concoction.

When creating Velma Jean Beauty I wanted a brand that was vegan, water/sweat resistant, innovative and great quality. I feel like I’ve found that with this newly created cosmetic line.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Always putting new content out there. Every time I do a new face I’m posting it on all my social media platforms. I also picked up photography in order to have clearer and more professional photos.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I came to San Diego with only what I could carry on the plane. So my makeup kit seemed as if it just vanished. I was left to start over again building my kit, a basic start over from scratch situation. I had to find clients all over again, get my name out there.
