We were lucky to catch up with Freshta Madrid recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Freshta , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
One of the things that I do differently as a stylist in my industry is educate my clients on the scientific aspect of hair. I breakdown in laymen terms to make them understand the dos and don’ts. With that included I take full 15-20 min consult fore starting the actual hair service. I take a step by step approach in explaining what I’m doing and why. For example if I use thinning shears I explain the purpose and how it works. I find it makes clients feel more comfortable and build trust.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I found myself doing prom updos and experimenting with hair color in high school. I had always been into fashion but particularly hairstyles. This was also influenced by my Dad who had some barbering experience, he had always told me I had talent for hair and I’m a people person to pursue hair because it will never fail as a business if it’s truly my passion. With that said I had done my friends hair for her prom and suddenly I was booked for events parties and even weddings shortly after. I realized I love being creative and with hair possibilities are endless. I just love making people feel beautiful and gain back their confidence or make their special occasion memorable.
I have a boutique style studio salon that’s hipster with a zen feel. I provide all vegan products and ammonia free color. I also cater to women who cover with “hijab” since my I could block out the studio with curtains. I am a master cutter at pixie haircuts ranging from any era. I have clients that fly out to me just for the pixie haircut so I def want to emphasize on that one. I do offer balayage and other color services. What sets me apart from others is a full consultation before starting service with step by step approach in explaining details and education clients on the scientific breakdown of hair. I am proud of coming this far because I have had many challenges back to back. I am a hustler and I don’t stop trying. I even have a sign that reads “positive vibes only “
I’m also into nutrition and I write my clients herbal remedies and have my own little prescription note pad. If they are suffering from cancer or any other disease I like to take my time and reach out after the hair service and give emotional support and provide health tips. I truly can show empathy since I also am a care giver for others.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
It was magic on how I found my business partner. I seriously asked God to help me find a good location and positive environment where I could grow and become successful. This was 10 years ago so I used Craigslist to search for studio or salon locations since I wanted bigger space and the current salon was limited. It literally was the first ad! I searched it and couldn’t find any images online so I thought I need to go there and check it out for myself. I called and set up a meeting with Heather. As soon as I walked in we clicked immediately as if we have known each other for years. We both needed each other. I’m blessed.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The best strategy for me that has worked are networking events. I go bi weekly and I engage and offer trades. I get many referrals this way.
