We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsay Biondo-Lugo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with something countless entrepreneurs have had to figure out on the fly – how have you dealt with the rise of remote work?
Yes, my team is fully equipped to work remotely, and we have enjoyed the journey of successfully adapting to this new mode of operation.
We have invested in comprehensive digital tools such as CAD software, SketchUP, project management platforms, and collaborative design apps that allow our team to work seamlessly regardless of their physical location. Platforms like Zoom and Slack have become essential for communication and collaboration. All our design files, client presentations, and project documents are stored in the cloud. This ensures that our team can access and work on projects in real-time, which is crucial for maintaining continuity and efficiency. We hold regular virtual meetings to ensure alignment on projects, discuss progress, and brainstorm ideas. This keeps everyone connected and fosters a sense of teamwork and collaboration.
Some pitfalls include communication challenges and coordination issues. Despite our best efforts, remote work can sometimes lead to miscommunication and delays. We address this by setting clear communication guidelines and expectations and we make sure to schedule regular team check-in’s online.
Some non-obvious benefits include enhanced creativity and client flexibility – working in diverse environments has sparked greater creativity and innovation among our team, leading to more dynamic and inspired design solutions. Remote work also allows us to cater to clients from various locations and time zones more effectively, offering greater flexibility to our clients.
Lindsay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Lindsay, the founder of Houz of Rebel, an innovative interior design firm based in NYC. My journey into the world of interior design began in the art world, where I honed my skills in creativity and aesthetic appreciation. This foundation in art has profoundly influenced my approach to interior design, allowing me to bring a unique and artistic perspective to every project.
Initially, I started Houz of Rebel as a solo venture, handling all aspects of the business myself. This hands-on experience was invaluable as it gave me a deep understanding of every facet of the interior design process. Over time, I expanded the team to include Justine, our creative lead, and Vanessa, our project manager. Together, we re-branded Houz of Rebel last year, positioning ourselves to embrace and tackle more challenging and creative design projects.
We specialize in offering bespoke interior design solutions that are both innovative and personalized, and tailoring spaces that reflect the unique personality and needs of our clients. We excel in transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary environments that inspire and captivate. Our designs are not just about aesthetics; they are about creating functional spaces that enhance the quality of life for our clients. We address challenges such as maximizing space, integrating sustainable design practices, and creating unique, bold concepts that align with our clients’ visions.
What truly sets Houz of Rebel apart is our commitment to pushing the boundaries of conventional design. We are not afraid to take on bold and unconventional projects, embracing creativity and innovation at every turn. Our background in art allows us to infuse our designs with a unique artistic flair, making each project a work of art in its own right.
I am incredibly proud of our team’s ability to continuously deliver exceptional design solutions that exceed our clients’ expectations. Our recent re-branding marks a significant milestone, symbolizing our growth and readiness to take on more ambitious projects. I am also proud of the collaborative and inclusive culture we have cultivated within our team, which has been instrumental in our success.
We encourage our clients to embrace bold and creative design choices, transforming their spaces into true reflections of their personalities and aspirations. Our clients are at the heart of everything we do. We work closely with them to understand their needs and bring their visions to life.
In essence, Houz of Rebel is not just an interior design company; it is a creative hub where art and design converge to create stunning, functional, and artful spaces. We are excited to continue our journey, collaborating with clients who are ready to explore the limitless possibilities of interior design.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We aim to empower our clients to embrace their boldest design dreams. We believe that every space has the potential to tell an artful story, and we are dedicated to crafting narratives through our designs that resonate with the individuality and aspirations of those who inhabit them.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One significant lesson I had to unlearn was the notion that “doing everything myself is the only way to ensure quality and success.” I learned to trust and empower my team members by delegating responsibilities based on their strengths and expertise. This shift allowed me to realize the value of collaborative creativity, where diverse perspectives and skills could lead to more innovative and comprehensive design solutions. Encouraging open communication and idea-sharing within the team became a cornerstone of our approach. I shifted my mindset from controlling every detail to nurturing a team that could grow and evolve together. It was a challenging lesson to unlearn, but it has ultimately led to a more resilient, innovative, and thriving Houz of Rebel.
