We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robin Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robin below.
Robin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
Three years ago, I was contacted by a longtime friend and colleague about writing articles and recording videos for a youth development series. I was contracted to complete the work.
For more than ten years, I have worked in family literacy and designed youth educational programs. So, I was excited to work on this project. The request also signaled to me that it was time to move forward with plans to incorporate my educational consulting practice. This had been a long time goal of mine.
Shortly after launching Robin Wilson Educational Consulting LLC last year, I reached out to the Nurturing Wellness Group Foundation about developing a course around the content that I originally created for the youth that they serve. They liked the concept and agreed to partner to launch the five week interactive reflective journaling course that guides youth ages 12-18 in identifying their life purpose. This is how I gained my first organizational client and community partner.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a long-time community literacy advocate, teacher, and business leader, I am known as the resolute literacy strategist because I specialize in supporting organizations in developing effective literacy programs and practices to increase young people’s learning outcomes.
In April 2021, I established Robin Wilson Educational Consulting LLC (RWEC) to empower young people and organizations that serve youth by providing educational program development services, leadership training, and educational consulting services that yield high impact learning outcomes.
Earlier this year, RWEC launched “Living the P3 Principle: Live on Purpose, with Passion, and Have a Plan,” a five-week course for middle and high school scholars ages 12-18. Young scholars gain access to tools and resources to begin the process of creating a clear vision for their lives, and they cultivate and increase self awareness through multimodal and culturally responsive self-reflective tasks.
Robin Wilson Educational Consulting LLC offers four core services. We design high impact literacy programming for client organizations, curriculum development/instructional content creation services, motivational speaking services, and educational consulting services. We currently have two part-time employees and one educational advisor that works with me to create, plan, and market our educational programs and services.
RWEC is an extension of my work as a teacher and community literacy leader. After working for more than 10-years in Inkster, Michigan, and surrounding communities on literacy initiatives, I have taken the leap into full-time entrepreneurship to provide much needed supports to organizations striving to close the learning gap for young people. This is what my team works towards achieving through the services that we provide.
In my personal time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. Also, I love reading good books, creative writing, and traveling around the globe. As a Wolverine, I am a proud graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In February 2021, at 36, I experienced an ischemic stroke. At the time, I was a first grade teacher leading online classes. I was also in the process of planning to launch my educational consulting practice. For a brief moment in time, however, I was uncertain that I would be able to continue teaching, speaking, or pursuing business endeavors due to the fact that my expressive speech was impaired. Thankfully, within 48 hours, my expressive speech returned to its baseline.
This was a pivotal moment for me. I felt an urgency to share my story and establish my business. The fact that I survived a stroke made me even more determined to further pursue my passion for community literacy work.
More than one year later, I am thriving in my business, speaking, and writing career. My business earned certification through the National Entrepreneurs Assocation. RWEC now has an educational advisor who works with me to plan programs and proposals. Additionally, we have hired two part-time staff to provide support with administrative tasks and social media marketing. We are positioned to take on several new contracts.
In November 2021, I celebrated the new release of my children’s book “Mama Got Rhythm, Daddy Got Rhyme” at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, Michigan. Last fall, I also became an executive contributor for Brainz Magazine, which is an international publication for business leaders and coaches, where I write on matters of literacy and education.
This year, I became a United States Fulbright Hays GPA Brazil Fellow to engage in language and cultural immersion in Brazil, and to write and translate early grade books for Detroit Public Schools Community District. With a community of support, I continue to thrive and reach my goals for myself and collectively for my community.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I am a relational leader. Therefore, many of the opportunities that my company has gained stems from meaningful connections that I have built. My first business client was an organization that I had worked with professionally in the past. I have maintained strong relationships with community leaders throughout my career. As I build my business, I continue to leverage my network and forge new alliances to grow my companies’ capacity. My connections have served as referral sources and introduced me to new prospects. I have done the same in return.
