We were lucky to catch up with Ethan Holtsclaw recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ethan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
Covid has changed my business model a lot!
Primarily it’s changed the way that events have come up and what i’m out doing now. Sure, it’s led to losses here and there, but ultimately covid hasn’t gotten in the way just because of the amount of remote work I’m able to do now. It’s really taught me that it’s okay to turn down events or gigs to take care of myself.
Ethan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello everyone! My name is Ethan Holtsclaw!
I am primarily a concert photographer and lighting designer, but that hat changes a lot! I do anything from small bar shows to sold out shows, with a passion. If you needed any photography work, or even designing and programming something small or large, that’s all me!
The things that set me apart from the rest of the area is that I come at everything with open eyes and open ears. I love collaborating with the people that i’m working with so that i’m able to mesh better with everyone! Who wants an absolute robot!
Some of the things i’m most proud of accomplishing is taking photos for major artists or even being brought on for some small events for operation work.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I really think that being friendly with everyone that I came across at different shows helped me a lot. Sure, sometimes all you want to do is keep to yourself until the show starts so you can get your photos and get out. We all have those days, but when you take the minute or two to introduce yourself to others and start to network, you gain some insanely talented friends, even for the night.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Man, most rewarding aspect? It’s so hard to choose what’s the most rewarding aspect of any of this insane journey. I would love to say one of the most rewarding is coming home after a photo shoot or a lighting gig and thinking to yourself “Man, I got some insanely good stuff from that.” Loading everything up into your computer or rewatching videos from that night and reliving it all again.
I think the second part of what’s so rewarding to me is knowing that it’s going to help people remember important nights/days in their life. Sure, it’s just a photo set, or it was some insane lighting effect that made people look at the stage in awe, but that’s what makes them remember that. Seeing reposts of that particular night just make my heart explode.
