Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Holly Delgado. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Megan Holly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Photography is often viewed as a highly profitable or “easy money” profession. What many people don’t understand are the hidden costs and unseen work that goes into one session. The sessions that I offer clients include props, backdrops, and often times are in-studio. The specialized props can get pricey, and there is studio rent, equipment upkeep, programs such as websites and editing software subscriptions to factor in. Time is also a huge factor. There is pre-planning, setting up for the session, cleaning up after the session, and hours of editing time. Someone may believe they only received a one hour session, but in reality a session can take a full eight hours or more for me start to finish. This is at no fault of the clients. The behind the scenes work just isn’t spoken about often enough!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began photography when I was just a teenager. I used my mother’s old camera to capture some photos of family members. As time went on people began asking for sessions. I decided to take a leap into a business and bought some equipment to begin my journey. I used my parent’s living room as a studio for years! At the beginning of this year (7 years into my photography journey) I opened my own studio in Redlands California! I specialize in newborn and milestone photos. I capture many first birthday cake smashes and photograph many families during the holidays. I’ve photographed hundreds and hundreds of families. So many that I lost count within the first couple of years starting my business. Since beginning my career I’ve had two babies of my own that are just entering toddlerhood. This has given me such an understanding for the mommy’s who come in. I am so honored to be given the opportunity to photograph all of these precious babies. I can’t express my gratitude enough to every single client I’ve ever had.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I receive the most clientele through recommendations from past client’s. This has been something I’m very grateful for and I’ve recently started a referral program because of it! Client’s can get discounted or even free sessions!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I often see images of people from years ago, sometimes over 100 years ago, and it makes me wonder if hundreds of years from now someone will hold the photo I took in their hand and study it’s beauty. I’ve heard some people disregard the type of photography I do and say it isn’t art, but even newborn photography takes an immense amount of skill, creativity, talent, and patience! Having those final images edited and delivered to the client, getting the messages of gratitude, and seeing the photos hanging up on their walls gives me so much joy! I captured a photo they loved so much that they display it on their wall as art.
