Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janet Dixon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janet, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
Building a business alone is challenge for anyone, especially in an industry where there is a lot of other talented artists offering the same service.
That said, I think if I was starting over, I would focus first on having a team (social media, automation, etc) that believes in my vision so that I can focus on the aspects that need my attention most.

Janet, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello! My name is Janet, aka JMarie of JMarie Photography. I am a Dallas based portrait and wedding photographer, soon to include business branding. :) I started in 2018 shooting events and in 2020, weddings became my focus. My goal when I started was to provide my services to communities I felt were undeserved, and I still believe that we deserve to see ourselves and our memories in beautiful photos too.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Honestly, social media. :) After I decided that I wanted go focus on wedding photography, there was a major shift in how people consumed content. I knew I would have to make videos, so I decided this was my chance to show a little bit of my personality by making funny Reels for Instagram. So many of my wedding peeps found me from there and I even had one Reel go viral which grew my page’s following.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Recently, actually. I decided last summer that I needed to switch gears and add a steady income, which ultimately led to me not accepting any new client work (though I wasn’t getting much anyway, tbh) and focus on my job. It was difficult to let go of my dream because I kept telling myself I don’t take pictures to get rich, but the journey has been rewarding in so many more ways!
Coming back to photography after this stint in the workforce makes me want to work harder at what fuels me so that I can be comfortable covering all my monthly essentials, while providing the best I can to my clients.
