Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Imani Harvey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Imani, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
When im determining my pricing, it falls into a place on “if i was paying would i want to pay that?” A lot of business owners don’t take into account that most their potential clients would die for that look but because they are pricy it tends to turn a lot of heads. I want to change that and become afford for the high class, middle class and low class! No matter what class I’m in there is just some things that i won’t simply get because they are overpriced not because i didn’t have it. I want to be that brand that attracts every eye because I LOVE WHAT I DO !
Imani, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Imani Harvey and I am a MUA (Makeup artist) in Houston, Texas. I have been in the beauty industry for 5+ years and it has been a joyful ride! I started doing makeup in 9th grade and around that time makeup became really popular with James Charles, Jaclyn Hill, etc. I mocked many looks and soon started using my sisters as models then in no time started accepting clients, i was no where even near good but I’m glad those people gave me the practice and growth i needed. I’m a hard critic to myself so i stopped due to me not seeing my growth and me being over critical to myself but, when God wants you to do something he’ll always guide you’ll back. Im thankful to be blessed with my skill and making women feel beautiful.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Personally, there were a lot of faces i had to do discounted or free, which i didn’t mind because i got exposure, practice and most would tip me anyways ! If you have to do it for free to get your exposure, do it !! You never know what will come out of it!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was behind the scenes as a MUA in a photoshoot and there was barely any AC in the building and apply makeup to a sweaty face is quite the challenge. I got through foundation, contouring, highlighting and brows. As i apply the white eyeshadow her eyes they start ti water and water + shadow… yeah horrible. The humidity, heat and sweat was not my friend. I try more to fix it but i just had to go in erase it and redo it ! 2 times the charm and it came out perfect. It was frustrating and hard but i trusted myself and my skills to achieve greatness.
