We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tracy Coenen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tracy , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered for helping thousands of women through one of the most difficult times in their lives: divorce.
The divorce industry gets a bad rap, probably because divorce is such an emotional, expensive, and damaging process. But for people who are in terrible marriages, divorce is the path to a better, happier, and more stable future. I want to contribute something positive to the divorce space.
Women overwhelmingly come out of divorce worse off financially than the husbands they are separating from. The vast majority of women leave their marriages in debt, with insufficient earnings to cover their monthly expenses, and with a much smaller share of the marital assets than their ex-husbands.
I help women conquer the finances in their divorces and confidently claim their fair share of the marital assets and earnings. I show them how to create financial stability in the face of this life-changing event.
Tracy , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a forensic accountant for more than 25 years, and self-employed for most of that time. I work with attorneys and their clients to investigate fraud, find hidden money, and sort out complicated financial situations. Part of my forensic accounting practice involves divorce cases in which I am retained to figure out where the money went. As a result of working on those cases, I identified a need in the divorce space by women who are in the dark about their families’ finances.
I created the Divorce Money Guide to help women:
– understand the financial part of the divorce
– know what financial documents they need and how to get them
– learn what to look for in the financial documents to know more about their money
The Divorce Money Guide walks them through their finances so they can make informed financial decisions in their divorces.
I am proud to be able to meet women where they are in their understanding of money and finances. It still common for men to handle the finances in households, leaving women uninformed. Sometimes women are even prevented from knowing about their families’ financial situations. But it doesn’t matter how much or how little a woman knows about money or personal finance, because the resources from the Divorce Money Guide offer varying levels of help.
I want women to know that they CAN understand their money and they can confidently stand up for themselves in their divorces. They don’t have to settle for whatever offer that is being made to them. They can learn more about the money and demand a fair settlement.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My commitment to consistently providing valuable content and resources to my audience has built trust with them and given them confidence in me. Whether it’s a free resource or a paid resource, my audience knows there will always be great value provided.
I also take a very technical topic and make it easy for anyone to understand. I don’t want numbers and money to be a mystery. I don’t want to play into that old stereotype of “girls aren’t good with numbers.” I use plain language and break things down simply so that anyone can understand and make strides in their financial journey.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth has been the single best source of new clients. Social media, email lists, and content marketing are wonderful tools for growing an audience and getting the word out about my products and services. But I work in an area that requires a high level of trust. That trust is hard to build, but when a past or current client refers someone to me, it is the most valuable endorsement.
