Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Shaun Ward. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Shaun, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I was raised in environments where service was always fundamental. Many people in my personal life were people I looked up to because they served others, from serving in the military to serving communities. Watching their commitment to our country and communities set the trajectory for me as a professional. Since then, I have gained over 20 years of professional experience in problem-solving, ranging from simple to complex tasks. My work has taught me the value of a human-centered approach to investing in people, informing policy and practice, and driving performance. I take pride in analyzing strategies and finding innovative solutions to support individuals and organizations in creating a pathway for success. My passion for guiding people and driving organizational growth has inspired me to establish a consultancy firm where I can leverage my expertise and relationships to help more meaningfully. I am eager to continue making a positive impact and help others achieve their goals.
Dr. Shaun, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in New Jersey, where many good people were in environments that challenged their ability to thrive and prosper consistently. It was plagued with poverty, violence, and lack of access; however, at the same time, I was surrounded by people who cared with compassion and offered a sense of security and hope. This showed me that, despite your circumstances, you still can lead a life of purpose and affect the change you want to see within your sphere of influence.
I gained those same attributes because I looked up to those people. I saw their passion for helping, serving, and giving all they had to help others. As I matured and was able to put many of those experiences into context, I realized a sense of resilience developed in me to push through any setback and not settle on what was given to me but instead use that as a metric to want more for myself and my desire for others to enjoy for themselves.
This has led me to mentor and coach people in various circumstances, helping them to want more for themselves. I achieve this by developing strategies such as setting achievable goals and action plans to mitigate risks and navigate problems with evidence-based solutions.
SLW Group LLC is a problem-solving consultancy firm blends research and people-centered approaches to improve performance. For example, our company is working on a big project to improve executive function issues among professionals using neurofeedback technology. This technology improves mental health, emotional regulation, and brain function. In my 20+ year career, I saw how professionals had problems managing emotions or impulses, focusing on and completing a project or task, lacking the ability to multitask successfully, and having short-term memory issues. We can help solve this issue because of the science behind this neurotechnology and its successes.
This is a proud moment for us because this will be a solution to improve the person’s quality, thus becoming a better professional to improve the overall health of the organization and the community.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
My advice for managing a team and maintaining high morale would be to communicate clearly, empower team members, support growth opportunities, and recognize and celebrate achievements.
Clear Communication is the cornerstone of effective team management. It involves maintaining an ongoing dialogue with team members, setting clear expectations and goals, and being transparent about the ‘why’ of decisions and changes. This not only fosters understanding but also builds trust and unity within the team.
Empowering team members means creating a feedback system so that they not only have a voice in setting goals and developing strategies but also have some autonomy to make decisions within their responsibilities. This continues to build trust but encourages confidence in them and their abilities.
Supporting growth opportunities is another strategy for building an effective and motivating team. A development opportunity could be training, mentorship, coaching, or any other resource that helps members expand their skills and grow within their career paths.
Finally, the most enduring would be recognizing and celebrating every achievement, regardless of its level or impact. In my experience, everyone wants to feel appreciated for their contribution.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
SLW Group LLC has found that networking is the most effective strategy for the company. I firmly believe that building relationships with people and organizations is the key to success. This approach is mutually beneficial, as every engagement allows the company to help solve problems and evaluate our effectiveness through repeat clients, referrals, and new business opportunities.
