We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charmaine Freeman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charmaine below.
Charmaine , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I believe my parents instilled in me a set of morals and values that has guided me throughout my life like a compass. My parents are not perfect and I don’t always agree with them but I know, in raising me they did the best that they could. They provided me the support that they never had and I now can take that and become an even better person.
Charmaine , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Charmaine but you can call me Char. I write poetry and perform it at open mics. I am currently working on my first book called, “Late Blooming Lotus”. I started writing back in middle school but at that time it was not poetry. It was short stories and journaling. I kept up with that throughout high-school. I didn’t start writing poetry till my early 20’s.
To be honest it was in response to an ended relationship. I just had all these feelings that I didn’t know what to do with. I had to get them out so I kind of just word vomited them onto a page and I’ve been writing poetry ever since.
I believe the thing that set’s me apart from others is my poetry is so vulnerable and its basically like conversations with myself and storytelling combined. It also doesn’t always have resolution or a happy ending and that’s real life and I feel that’s what makes it relatable.
The thing I am most proud of is my book which is coming out soon! ” Late Blooming Lotus” is a labor of love that I can’t wait to share with the world.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think my main goal and mission is to make art that is relatable and connects me to my audience. Connection is the main motivating factor. After that being a Writer/Author means a lot to me. To be valued based on my thoughts and ideas would nurture the inner child inside of me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When I share my poetry I tend to find I am not alone. Many times we may feel a certain way about a certain subject, or have dealt with something, and we get so caught up in our own personal feelings like we are in this alone and no one else has felt what we are feeling or gone through what we’re going through. But when I share my feelings in poetry, other people say, “Oh, I feel that same way!” or ” Oh, I went through that too!” It just makes me feel seen and heard and normal.
