We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Olivia Barrier. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Olivia below.
Olivia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents always have pushed me to work for what I get. They also have always pushed me to be respectful, kind, & loving to people! So when I was 15 and very chatty with a big personality, I decided to waitress. I waitressed until I saved enough money to buy my own car, phone, and could get another job and start my photography career soon. Little did I know, my new boyfriend’s family would help me out to start my career the very next month! My now brother in laws best friend from highschool is a wedding photographer and she was looking to mentor someone and make them her secondary photographer for weddings. The next month I helped her at a wedding! We worked two weddings and then she hired me and I’ve worked for her up until now. I now am moving forward with my photography and going to continue to my own career with majoring in portraits and social media managing, minoring in branding and editorial. I also am married to a farmer and we are starting up our own dairy! We are adding onto our families 4th generation farm and I will start running our social media and doing more branding photography for ourselves! My parents have pushed me hard and I’m proud of who I am and who they made me to be!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Olivia Nicole, and I am a photographer and farmer! I am proud of building my business from nothing to something that is bigger than I ever imagined. I got into my business because I loved taking pictures when I was little of myself, friends, and family! It has let me to so many opportunities and ways to make me see how I want to stand out from others. I want to be different by how I treat my clients! The way you’re treated and loved by your photographer matters! It matters because it makes your session way more comfortable and you feel like you belong in front of the camera when you’re more comfortable with your photographer and get along. I want you to feel amazing when I send you your session! Confident, proud, and beautiful!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth! Again, word. of. mouth!! This is veryyyyy important! Also how you present yourself. How you carry and present yourself as a small business owner matters. It matters because how you approach people will determine what they not only think of you, but how they talk about you and your business! So talk highly of yourself, talk highly of your business, and talk big. Talk big in the sense of all of your dreams, tell them you’re working on getting to “xyz”. It will not only help you feel closer to that goal, but maybe that person knows someone who needs help!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Your friends will want free things from you and at some point, you’ve got to know your worth! Your bestest friend(s), sure! Give them free things! Not everyone is your bestest friend though so know where to draw the line and charge someone, friend or not. It will get you farther in life and have more people respect you than not!
